BOOKS are entered in the following Catalogue under the names of authors, whe known; under the initials of the authors' mumes when these only appear, the last initi being put first; under the pseudonyms, or assumed names, of the writers, when the re names are not ascertained. Such books are also entered under their titles, followed the names, initials, or pseudonyms of the authors. In case of an anonymous work, th anthor of which is known, the entry is under the first word of the title, not an artic

In the headings of the titles, the names of authors are given In their vernacular fors French surnames preceded by Le, La. or L are entered under L: by Dior Des, unde D; by de or d, under the initial letter of the name following this profix. In Engl names, the prefix is treated as a component part of the suruame; as in De Quincey Van Evrie. In all other languages, surnames are entered under the letter which bega the name that follows the prefix.

Compound surnames are entered under the first part of the name.

British noblemen and ecclesiastical dignitaries are entered under their family nam with cross-references from their titular appellations. All other noblemen are catalogue under their titles.

A single dash indicates the omission of the preceding heading; a subsequent das the omission of a subordinate heading. Names or initials inclosed within marks of pare thesis are such as are not usually retained by the persons to whom they properly belon as. Agassiz, Louis (John Rudolphe). In the headings of titles, the Germ diphthongs, 8, 6. ii, are written ne, oe, ne; Goethe occurs, for example, in alphab ical order before Goldsmith, instead of after it. An italicized name within m of parenthesis following the name of an author is the pseudonym of such author; Adams, William T. (Oliver Optic, Brackets, within titles, inclose words addition or changed in form.
