BERLIN, February, 1885.

The attention of the medical profession is respectfully called to the fact that an imitation, under the name of Hoff's Malt Extract, is being sold in the United States upon the name and reputation of the genuine article. The imitation is put up in tall slim bottles of American make, and is easily distinguished from the genuine, which is sold in the original imported flasks, containing one-third more than the imitation, and bearing the signatures of Johann Hoff and Moritz Eisner upon the neck of each bottle.

In justice to the profession and to me (the sole manufacturer of the genuine Johann Hoff's Malt Extract), I beg to ask the profession to mention Hoff's Malt Extract, imported by "Eisner," when prescribing the same, to insure the patient the GENUINE article.

Very respectfully,

JOHANN HOFF,

Notes on Some Important Pills and Granules

PREPARED AND INTRODUCED BY

MCKESSON & ROBBINS, NEW YORK.

McK. & R. GRANULE ALOIN AND STRYCHNINE.

4 Aloin. 1-5 gr. Strychnina, 1-60 gr. >

McK, & R. GRANULE ALOIN, STRYCHNINE AND BELLADONNA, No. 1.

Aloin, 1-5 gr. Strychnina, 1-60 gr. Extract Belladonna, 1-8 gr.

McK. & R. GRANULE ALOIN, STRYCHNINE AND BELLADONNA, No. 2.
Aloin, 1-10 gr. Strychnina, 1-50 gr. Ext. Belladonna, 1-6 gr.

McK. & R. GRANULE ALOIN, STRYCHNINE AND BELLADONNA COMP.

Aloin, 1-5 gr. Strychnina, 1-60 gr. Ext. Belladonna, 1-8 gr Rhamnus Purshianæ, 1-2 gr.

We were the first to introduce the above combinations, in pill form, to the attention of the Profession, and their value in the treatment of chronic constipation was promptly appreciated. They are of especial value to aged patients and those of weakened condition, as they restore painless peristaltic action. If physicians will specify "McK. & R.'s" on their prescriptions for these, they can confidently expect success in their treatment of the most confimed cases.

McK. & R. GRANULE ACONITINE (Duquesnel's Crystals), 1-500, 1-200 gr.

Dr. E. C. Seguin ("Archives Medicine, June, 1882,") says: Aconitine has been used by many physicians in numerous cases of trigeminal neuralgia, with very favorable results. A large proportion of cases have been cured, and some very ancient cases (8 to 12 years) greatly relieved by the medicine. It is well

to give debilitated, and susceptible, and female patients 1-250 or 1-200 grain to begin with. Specify "McK. & R."

McK. & R. PILL BLACK OXIDE OF MANGANESE, 2 grs.

Of value in amenorrhoea; one pill may be given just at bed-time for several nights. Our notes speak greatly in favor of this remedy. Preferred to Permanganate of Potas. Specify "McK. & R."

McK. & R. GRANULE MURIATE OF COCAINE, 1-10 gr.

Reported to be of value in the cure of the "opium and chloral habits," and vomiting in pregnancy. In cases of sleeplessness its action was very satisfactory. In anæmia, the patient was much improved by 1-5 gr. daily for six days. Specify "McK. & R."

McK. & R. GRANULE NITRO-GLYCERIN (Glonoinum), 1-50, 1-100 gr.

Dr. McCall Anderson, mentioning the exhibition of this drug in angina pectoris, says: "My experience of the comparative merits of nitrite amyl and nitro-glycerin is, that while the latter works more slowly, it seems to be more permanently beneficial." Dr. W. t. Greene says, after giving several cases of heart disease: "Iu this new agent we have a very powerful measure in the disease of the heart. Not only palliative, but in many cases actually curative." Dr. Wm. A. Hammond gives this drug in migraine and epilepsy with good results. The dose is one drop of a one per cent solution, equal to one of the 1-100 gr. pills. It should be very cautiously increased. The above facts are taken from the New York Medical Abstract, pp. 278 and 379, 1881, and p. 104, 1882. Specify "McK. & R."

McK. & R. GRANULE PROTO-IODIDE OF MERCURY.

1-20, 1-10 gr.; 1 cent.; 1-8, 1-5, 1-4, 1-3, 1-2 gr.

We now obtain this salt absolutely pure, free from the red iodide or metallic mercury; and in a perfectly impalpable powder. The advantages of this must be apparent to every physician; in fact we have received abundant testimony as to the great superiority of the new preparation, and our vastly increased sales are additional proof. The irritation of the stomach so frequently caused by the ordinary salt is no doubt due to impurity, such as red iodide, and is not observed in the use of our proto-iodide. We will furnish samples of the granules or of the salt on application. Useful in scrofula and scrofulous syphilis. Should never be given at the same time with Iodide of Potassium, which converts it into Bin-Iodide. Dose, 1-20 to 1-2 gr. Specify "McK. & R."

McK. & R. PILL QUININE AND CHLORIDE OF GOLD, (Bauduy.)

Auri Chlorid..

1-20 gr. Ferri Arsenias, 1-6 gr. Strychnine Sulph.. 1-40 gr. Quinine Sulph.. 1gr.)

A prominent physician writes us:-"I find that combination (pil, quinia et chlor. gold. comp.) a most useful tonic in all forms of mental depression hypochondriasis, melancholia, hysteria and allied affections. Especially so in that mental condition when dependent on the presence of the syphilitic poison in the system. It not only relieves the mental symptoms, but proves an efficient aid in elimination of the poison. In treatment of the opium habit, after a number of year's use of this compound, I am thoroughly convinced of its value." Dose, 1 pill three times a day after meals.

McK. & R. GRANULE AND PILL SULPHIDE CALCIUM (Calx Sulphurata), 1-20, 1-10, 1-4, 1-2, 1, 11-2, 2, 21-2, 3 grs.

This salt is mentioned by Dr. Ringen in the Lancet for Feb., 1874. We added the pills to our list about ten years ago, at the request at a prominent physician, who used them with great success in scrofula, glandular enlargements, etc. Our sales have been very large indeed, and this valuable remedy is now much used by the profession. Dose, in certain cases 1-10 grain may be given every hour, or 1-4 to 1 grain twice a day. Dr. Simeon Snell, in the Practitioner for January, 1882, gives a record of several cases of strumous ophthalmia treated with Sulphide Calcium, which recovered very rapidly under its use. He gives 1-16 to 1-8 grain three times a day. These cases are given in NY. Medical Abstract. p. 74, 1882. Specify "McK. & R." A full list of our pills and granules (about 400 kinds), with a list of granules of rare and expensive alkaloids, valuable notes, etc., may be found in our vest-pocket formula book, which is mailed free on application.

It produces refreshing sleep, and is exceedingly valuable in sleeplessness, nervousness, neuralgia, headache, convulsions, colics, etc., and will relieve when opiates fail. Unlike preparations of opium it does not lock up the secretions. In the restlessness and delirium of Fevers it is absolutely invaluable.

When given in hot water its action is almost instantaneous. An overdose causes pain at base of the brain.
