Cards. For every pack of playing cards which shall be made fit for sale or use in Great Britain,

And all such persons shall permit the officers to enter such places, and take an account of the cards and dice, under the penalty of 101. for every refusal. And no maker of cards and dice shall suffer the same to be removed from the place of making, until such mark upon the dice, and such seal upon the paper and thread inclosing every pack of cards, shall be put there on, as the commissioners shall appoint, upon pain of forfeiting all such cards aud dice, and treble the value. 9 Ann.

And if any person shall make cards or dice in any place be- Making in uns fore he shall have given such notice, he shall, over and above entered places. the said penalties, forfeit all the cards and dice, and all the materials and utensils for making the same, which shall be found in such place, or shall have been made there; and no materials begun to be wrought for making of cards or dice shall be removed, until the same shall have been completely made, or the duties paid or secured; upon pain to forfeit double the duty with costs. 10 Ann. c. 19, s. 166.

And if the commissioners for the stamp duties shall have cause to suspect that persons make cards or dice in any place without sending notice, and affidavit be made thereof before any justice of peace declaring the ground of suspicion, any officer of the duties ou cards and dice may, in the day time, in the presence of a constable or other peace officer, by warrant from such justice, break open such place, and seize all cards, dice, tools, or materials there found, and detain the same as the commissioners shall direct; and in case the same shall not within five days be claimed and replevied by the owners, they shall be forfeited, and may be sold by direction of the commissioners; one moiety of the produce (charges deducted) to be to his majesty, and the other to the party who shall discover the same. 6 Geo. 1, c. 21, s. 59.

And every maker of playing cards shall send to the commis. sioners or their officers, a sufficient quantity of paper to have as many aces of spades marked thereon as such maker shall desire; and every pack shall have one such ace so marked: and the commissioners shall cause a stamp to be prepared with such device as they think proper, to denote the said ace, as well in every pack made for use or play in Great Britain, as for exportation, so as that in such device there be some distinguish. ing mark between cards for home, and cards for foreign cou sumption. 5 Geo. 3, c. 46, s. 2.

And every maker shall send to the commissioners or their officers, jews or wrappers, made for inclosing cards for use or play in Great Britain, with his name, and any other particular word or thing printed thereon, as the commissioners shall direct, in order that the same may be stamped, and delivered again to such maker; and the commissioners shall denote one of the sixpenny duties on such jew or wrapper. s. 10.

Dice, Commissioners of stamps shall cause Dice to be enclosed, after the same shall be duly stamped, in a paper wrapper, marked with any stamp or mark provided for that purpose, and fastened with a thread or seal, as commissioners shall direct; and may also (on request) mark the maker's name on such wrapper. 41 Geo. 3. c. 86. s. 4.

And separate accounts shall be kept by the proper officer with every card maker, to be made out from the number of aces and jews or wrappers delivered; and the maker shall, once in every 28 days, attend at the Stamp office, or on the next distri buter of stamps, and settle and sign the same; and in case any difference shall arise in settling such accounts, he shall imme diately, or within one week after, if he carries on trade within ten miles of London: and if at a greater distance, then within twenty days, apply to the commissioners to settle the same, whose determination shall be final. s. 11.

But in case any pack of cards, or part, shall be damaged or spoiled, in making, then, on oath thereof, the maker shall be allowed another ace of spades instead of the ace damaged or spoiled, on delivering up the damaged ace. * s. 12.

Also the makers of dice shall once in every 28 days, make entry upon oath with the commissioners or their officer next adjacent, of all the dice made within that time. 9 Ann. c. 23,s. 42.

And the said makers of cards and dice shall once in six Payment of weeks clear all the duties on pain of forfeiting 201. for every duties. default in making entry, and double the duty for nonpayment. 9 Ann. c. 23, s. 42.

And every card maker shall, at the time of entering every parcel of cards, enter into bond to his majesty, with sureties, in treble the duties on such cards, with condition for the true payment of the duties within six weeks after the date of such bond. 6 Geo. 1. c. 21, s. 57.

And if any maker shall usc, in the making up any pack of cards, any ace of spades, jew or wrapper, used before, he shall forfeit 201. 5 Geo. 3, c. 46, s. 13.

Also, by 12 Geo. 3, c. 48, taking off the stamp of any playing cards, or outside paper, with intent to use the same again, is felony, and transportation for seven years.

And if any person shall sell or buy any cover or label, be fore made use of, for denoting the duty payable on cards, in order to be made use of for the inclosing any pack of cards, every person so offending shall for every such offence forfeit 29 Geo. 3, c. 13, s. 8.

Also, by 5 Geo. 3, c. 46, if any person shall sell or buy any ace of spades, jew, or wrapper, in order to be made use of in, about, or for the inclosing, any pack or parcel of cards, he shall forfeit 201. s. 14.

And if either the buyer or seller shall inform against the other, the party informing shall be admitted to give evidence, and shall be indemnified against the penalties so incurred. 29 Geo. 2, c. 13, s. 9.-5 Geo. 3. c. 46, s. 15.

And if any person shall sell or dispose of any cards, c'lled waste cards, unless he before such sale mark the back or plain side of every painted card, in such manner as to render the same unfit to be used in play; every person so offending shall, for every such offence, forfeit 201. 29 Geo. 2. c. 13. s. 10.

And by 16 Geo. 3, c. 34, s. 17, if any person shall sell any cards (by way of second-hand cards) in packs or parcels, after the wrapper or cover in which the same have been inclosed and tied, shall have been broke open, unless he shall, before such sale, mark the back or plain side of every painted or pictured card, in such manner as to render the same unfit to be used in play; every person so offending shall, for every pack so sold, forfeit 51.

It shall be lawful to remove any cards or dice from the place where the same are made, without stamping the same,or paying the dutics, provided that within one month after the same shail be made, and before the same be removed, a bond be entered into to the king, with surety, in a penal sum of double the du ties, with condition for the exporting such cards or dice beyond the seas within a time to be limited, and that the same shall not be relanded in Great Britain: and provided such bond be left in the hands of the commissioners, and a certificate given by them, or such officer as shall be appointed, that such bond is entered into. 10 Ann. c. 19. s. 170.

And no bond so entered into, shall be vacated or delivered up, until proof be made, that such cards or dice have heen en tered and shipped for exportation as cards and dice, and not as stationary wares,and until a certificate of such entry and shipping, signed by the proper officers of the customs, be produced. 29 Geo. 2. c. 13, s. 7.

And no playing cards or dice shall be exported without being stamped, until after 10 days previous notice shall be given at the head office of stamps by the makers thereof, of the quanti

ty, the port or place from whence, and the port or place to which the same are intended to be exported, nor until a certi ficate of such matters be delivered to the proper officer of the customs, nor shall any be laden or shipped but in the presence of such officer of customs. 41 Geo, 3. c. 86. s. 5.

But cards or dice may be removed from the place of making without payment of duties, provided the same are duly marked for exportation, and a bond in treble the probable amount of duty be first entered into. 41 Geo. 3. c. 86.

And if any person shall re-land, or canse to be re-landed, any Relanding parcel of cards, after entered and shipped for exportation such cards shipped for exportation person shall forfeit 501. 5 Geo. 3. c. 46, s. 16.

Also, if any person concerned in the re-lauding of such exportation cards, shall inform against any other party concerned, the person informing shall be admitted to give evidence and be indemnified against the penalties incurred. s. 17.

And cards or dice exported contrary to such provisions, or relanded after entry thereof for exportation, or which after auch entry, shall be found in any un entered place for making the same, or found removing from place to place without being stamped (except for exportation, shall be forfeited. 41 Geo. 3. C. 86.

And all playing cards made for exportation, shall before they Packing up are packed up for exportation be inclosed in paper and thread, for exportation in packs or parcels, in such manner as the commissioners shall direct, to distinguish them from other cards; and one card in every pack for exportation, or so many cards as the commissioners shall direct, shall be duly stamped on the spotted side with such mark as the commissioners shall direct; and if any person utter to be used within Great Britain, or use or permit to be used in any public gaming house, any playing cards so stampt and distinguished as cards for exportation, such person shall for every pack forfeit 201. 29 Geo. 2. c. 13, s. 6.

All pieces of ivory, bone, or other matter, made or used for What deemed any play, with any letters, figures, spots, or other marks there. dice. upon, to denote any chance, shall be adjudged to be dice, and charged with duties; and if there shall be more than six chances on any one piece, it shall be charged with duty; and if there shall be more than the number of chances usually in a pair of dice, such one piece shall be charged with a further duty proportionate to the number of chances exceeding. 10 Ann. c. 19,
