The SAME ODE Imitated.

By Mr. J. DUN COM BE.

On the Conquest of LOUISBOURG, QUEBEC, and all CANADA,

By the Generals AMHERST and WOLFE.

S Western Orellana, King of Floods,

Swoln with the cloud-capt Andes endless
Snows,

Through devious Vales and unfrequented Woods,
In foaming Cataracts, impetuous, flows;
And thence round fragrant Isles and Citron
Groves

Serenely winds, where, in his Plantane Bower, Sleeps the rude Indian, or fecurely roves,

Unknown our Avarice, unfelt our Power: Or as Vefuvius, with terrific Sound,

Rolls flaming Rocks adown his craggy Sides, Shakes the firm Earth for many a League around, Obfcures the Sun, and heaves the distant Tides; Then from his vaft Abyfs, with rapid Force,

Pours fiery Streams, which deluge all the Plain, And Swains, and Herds, and Hamlets, in their Course,

O'erthrow, and sweep, promifcuous, to theMain: So Britain's Chiefs, amidst th' united Roar

Of Winds, Waves, Cannons, though the Gallic Hoft,

Aided by Art and Nature, lin'd the Shore, Rufh'd to the Royal Ifle's tempeftuous Coast; And France, till then victorious in the West,

At length by Amherst and young Wolfe fubdu'd, The Fruits, matur'd in each fagacious Breast,

Of William's Counfels and Example view'd. Th' Inftructor's Skill his Pupils Labours fhow;

A well-trac'd Copy speaks a Master's Hand: Thus to Turenne their Churchill Britons owe, And thus to Royal Frederick, Ferdinand. So his young Progeny with Thirst of Blood The Lion fires, and points the promis'd Spoil; So the fierce Eagle trains his tender Brood,

Directs their Courfe, and animates their Toil. Culture improves each Hero's generous Mind; All Arts a diligent Attention claim: To martial Practice Science must be join'd : Hence rofe a Wolfe's, a Howe's, a Cæfar's Fame! What to her Wolfe, this grateful Nation owes, Be Witness, Abraham's Height, that glorious Day,

When ev'n in Death he triumph'd o'er his Foes, And bade Quebec, like Louisbourg, obey! When from a tottering Tower, just wing'd for Flight,

Thy Genius, France, faw all Resources vain, Saw, forc'd to try the dubious Chance of Fight, Thy Army routed, and its † Leader flain.

Fir'd with like Zeal, our Troops with better Fate The Toils of War in those rough Climes fuftain'd;

Montreal laft unbarr'd her lingering Gate,

NOTES.

In Juftice to Mr. Jofeph Warton, it fhould be acknowleged that this firft Simile (of the River of the Amazons) is in a great measure borrowed from his fublime Ode on Mr. Welt's Tranflation of Pindar. See Dodfley's Mifc. Vol. IV. p. 212.

2 This Phenomenon (as it may juftly be ftyled) cannot be better described than in the following Lines, in a Poem written fome Years ago by the late Sir William Yonge:

It is a Reptile of so strange a Sort,

That if 'tis cut in two it is not dead,

Its Head fhoots out a Tail, its Tail a Head;
Take out its Middle, and obferve its Ends,
Here a Head rifes, there a Tail defcends;
Or cut off any Part that you defire,

That Part extends, and makes itself entire..

3 When Montreal furrendered, it is affirmed that many fuch barbarous Trophies were found hanging in the Marq. de Vaudreuil's Palace.

O DE V.

To AUGUSTUS Cæsar.

By Mr. DUNCOMBE, fen.

BORN when Stars aufpicious fmil'd;
Of joyful Rome thou Guardian mild !
No longer let the Senate mourn,
But, faithful to thy Word, return!
Indulgent Chief, Oh! chear our Hearts,
For, as the Spring new Life imparts,
So, in thy Prefence, smoother run
The Hours, and brighter fhines the Sun.
As fome fond Mother begs of Heaven,
Her Boy may to her Arms be given,
Whom Winds, with envious Blast, detain
Beyond the rough Carpathian Main ;
Her Hands fhe raises to the Skies,
Nor from the Shore can turn her Eyes;
Thy Country, fmit with warm Defires,
Devoutly thus her Lord requires!

For fafe our Oxen graze the Plain,
And Ceres crowns with golden Grain
Our smiling Fields. From Shore to Shore,
The Merchant wafts his coftly Store.
Justice her Head unblemish'd rears,

Nor any Violation fears.
