A NEW VERSION OF THE FOUR GOSPELS; with Notes, Critical and Explanatory, by a Catholic, 8vo. boards, 10s. 6d.

Amongst the principal reasons which have led to this New Version, are first, to show, in opposition to the Protestant principle, that the Scriptures are the sole rule of faith,-"The impracticability of drawing from the narratives of the FOUR EVANGELISTS, without the aid of oral testimony or tradition, all their knowledge of Christian faith, or Christian practice."--Vide PREFACE.

2ndly, To present a new translation from the Original Greek, with explanatory and interesting notes; which, in removing the defects that exist in the present versions, and offering a more elegant translation of these divinely-inspired books, should render them more intelligible and attractive, and thus create a more general attention to their perusal.

It is also meant, hereby, to refute the false and unfounded assertions, "that Catholics are deficient in BIBLICAL CRITICISM, and dare not attempt it;" and, "that they forbid, or impede the reading the Holy Scriptures;" accusations which they reject with indignation.

Church Service.

THE MISSAL FOR THE USE OF THE LAITY; with the Masses for all the Days throughout the Year, according to the Roman Missal, and those for the English Sain's in their respective places. Newly arranged and in great measure translated by the Rev. F. C. Husenbeth, 3rd edition, improved, price 6s. 6d. in sheep lettered, and 8s. in calf.

N.B. The Missal may be had either with or without Plates, at the option of the purchaser. Some copies are kept bound in the Ancient Monastic Style of the Middle Ages, from designs by A. Welby Pugin, Esq.; adorned with brass corners and clasps in the same style; and some are splendidly bound in rich velvet, with metal gilt corners and clasps.

THE VESPERS BOOK, for the use of the Laity, according to the Roman Breviary; with the offices of the English Saints and those recently inserted in the Calendar, in their respective places, newly arranged and translated by the Rev. F. C. Husenbeth, price 4s. 6d. bound in coloured sheep, lettered.

ADDRESS. This edition of the Vespers Book will be found to possess some valuable recommendations. It is arranged strictly in accordance with the Roman Breviary, so that the Proper of Saints follows immediately after the Sundays, and the Common of Saints has its appropriate place at the end. The Hymns, and the Antiphons after Complin, are all newly translated, in the same metre as the Latin originals.

Several offices, which in former Vespers Books were inaccurately given, are here corrected; others, subsequently raised to a higher rite, are properly noted; and the offices of saints more recently introduced, inserted in their proper places. The version of the Prayers is the same as in the Missal by the same editor; the two works are arranged and printed to correspond with each other: and it is hoped that the encouraging patronage which the Missal has experienced will be extended to this much improved edition of the Vespers Book.-COSSEY, June 26th, 1841.

APPROBATIONS.
