MEDITATION.

It is but a short time ago since I entered upon year, and now, I perceive, that a twelfth part of it has passed away and gone for ever. Alas! how quick does time pass away! numbers of my fellow-creatures, and perhaps some of my acquaintance and relatives, since its commencement, have been summoned to appear before their Maker, to give an account of the things done in this state of probation, and yet I am spared. How thankful I ought to be, that I am yet in the land of the living, and in the place of hope! What return shall I make to my God, for his sparing mercy? let me be thankful unto him, and bless his holy name; let me be penitent for all my past

transgressions; let me pray for the influence of his Holy Spirit, and a lively faith in his Son Jesus Christ, who hath promised not only to give rest to them who are weary and heavy-laden, but also hath declared, that him that cometh unto him, he will in no wise cast out.

Come unto me, the Saviour calls,
And you shall rest obtain ;
Come unto me, and you shall live;
And shall He call in vain?

No! may I to the true Branch flee,
For pardon, peace, and grace;
That at His coming, I may see,

With joy, His lovely face.

FEB. 1. And Solomon determined to build an house for the name of the Lord, and an house for his kingdom. 2 Chron. ii. 1.

Let us not be weary in well-doing for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not. Gal. vi. 9. Meditate on Solomon's determination to ad

vance the Lord's kingdom.

Pray for grace to enable you, according to the utmost of your power, to do the same.

FEB. 2. Ye shall keep my sabbaths, and reverence my sanctuary: I am the Lord. Lev. xxvi. 2.

And Paul, as his manner was, went in unto them, and three sabbath-days reasoned with them out of the Scriptures, opening and alledging that Christ must needs have suffered, and risen again from the dead; and that this Jesus, whom I preach unto you, is Christ. Acts xvii. 2, 3.

Reflect on the manner in which the sabbath has been spent in all ages by the faithful servants of God.

Pray that you may keep it holy, in such a way as may be well pleasing in his sight, &c.

FEB. 3. Happy is the man whom God correcteth: therefore despise not thou the chastening of the Almighty. Job v. 17.

Now no chastening for the present seemeth to be joyous, but grievous: nevertheless afterward it yieldeth the peaceable fruit of righteousness unto them which are exercised thereby. Heb. xii. 11. Meditate on the benefit of afflictions, &c.

Pray that your afflictions may be sanctified, &c.

FEB. 4. The Lord knoweth the way of the righteous but the way of the ungodly shall perish. Ps. i. 6.

Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap. Gal, vi. 7.

Reflect on the omniscience of God, &c.

Pray for holiness, chastity, &c.

FEB. 5.

Thus saith the Lord, Set thine

house in order for thou shalt die, and not live.

Is. xxxviii. 1.

Watch ye therefore.

Mark xiii. 35.

Consider the certainty of death, &c.

Pray that it may not come upon you unawares, &c.

FEB. 6. Kiss the Son, lest he be angry, and ye perish from the way. Ps. ii. 12.

Then Jesus said unto them, Yet a little while is the light with you. Walk while ye have the light, lest darkness come upon you. John xii. 35.

Reflect on the danger of provoking and slighting the Saviour.

Pray for an interest in the Saviour, who came as a light into the world, &c.

FEB. 7. If I justify myself, mine own mouth shall condemn me: if I say, I am perfect, it shall also prove me perverse. Job ix. 20.

If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. 1 John i. 8. Meditate on the sin of self-righteousness, &c. Pray for forgiving grace, &c.

FEB. 8. Behold, God is my salvation; I will trust, and not be afraid for the Lord Jehovah is my strength and my song; he also is become my salvation. Is. xii. 2.
