was, the king of Naples lost Sicily notwithstanding his victories, in spite of which Don Fadrigue remained king of that Island. Peace being concluded Roger de Laaria retired to Spain, and died in Valencia, the 16th of January, 1304. He was buried in the Monastery of Santas Cruces, of the order of San Bernardo, in Catalonia, beneath the monument erected to the memory of Peter III. whose greatest friend he had been. By his will, made at Lerida in 1291, he directed that he should be interred in that Monastery in case his death should take place in Aragon, Catalonia, Valencia or Majorca. On his epitaph, though somewhat damaged by time, may still be deciphered the following words, translated from the Catalan language, in which it is written: "Here lies the noble Roger de Lauria, Admiral of the kingdom of Aragon and Sicily for the king of Aragon. He departed this life in the year of the incarnation of our Lord Jesus Christ, 1304, on the 16th day of February." The simplicity and modesty of this inscription renders the fame of Roger the more conspicuous, and puts to shame those, who, having been without merit or distinction in their lives, desire to deceive posterity after death, by having high-sounding epitaphs placed on their sepulchres. Neither in the ages before him or since has any warrior or seaman surpassed him in valour or military accomplishments, or in success or fame. He was in height neither tall nor short, but of great muscular strength, and a grave and composed exterior, announced from his youth both dignity and authority. Upon occasions of display, and in jousts and tournaments, nobody could rival him in magnificence, or contend with him in valour or dexterity. Pity it is that to such great and noble qualities he united a harshness and cruelty of character which obscured their lustre. His tiger's heart never pardoned, and abusing his power over the vanquished, he rendered himself unworthy of victory. The ferocity of the age in which he lived, and the nature of those unhappy civil wars in which he fought, may in part excuse this great defect: but being himself distinguished at the time for vengeance and cruelty, it would seem that his savage heart was even more relentless and inhuman than the times and circumstances in which he lived. He was twice married: first to the sister of Conrado Sanza, and kinsman of Dona Constantia, Don Pedro's wife; and secondly, to a daughter of Don Berenguer de Entenza. His descendants, connected with the first families of Aragon and Catalonia, still preserve among their surnames, that of the illustrious Admiral. If we have placed him, notwithstanding he was born out of Spain, and of foreign extraction, among the celebrated men of our country, it is because he came into Aragon when quite a child, was educated there, grew up there, and there became established. For Aragon he fought, and at the head of the Aragonese forces. His skill, his battles, his victories, his fame, his virtues, and even his very vices belong to Spain. SALES OF BLOOD STOCK. By Messrs.
