FOURTH WEEK, JANUARY 28 TO FEBRUARY 2.

The first five days of the fourth week are devoted to the construction of fortifications and trench warfare; eight hours per day on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday of this week will be used in the construction of trenches and obstacles. Beginning on Thursday morning the entire command, including the instructors, will occupy the trenches continuously until Friday night. During the time while the men are in the trenches they will be given suitable instruction in attack and defense, use of hand and rifle grenades, gas masks, instruction in sentry duty and trench orders, relieving of units, sanitation, liaison, grenade screens, etc.

At all times when the men are in the trenches it will be assumed that they are actually confronting an enemy, and all movements in the trenches, carrying of supplies and food, will be based on this assumption.

Where it has been impracticable to complete construction of the entire system of trenches and dugouts, emplacements, etc., they will be staked out and taped on the ground, and the movements of all officers and men will be made on the assumption that the trenches are actually constructed.

If it is desired during any part of this period to give instruction such as close-order drill, or any other which can not be given in the trenches, the command will be properly relieved, marched out the trenches, and the instruction given on the open ground in the vicinity of the trench system. Upon the conclusion of such instruction the trenches will again be occupied.
