PREFACE.

[ocr errors]

HE general interest taken in Educational matters at the present time has led to the compilation of the following work; which it is hoped may prove useful to those who are battling with man's terribly aggressive foe, Ignorance, pointing out, as the Catalogue does, the materials obtainable for carrying on the warfare.

Every exertion has been made to render the Work as perfect as possible, although no claim is made for absolute completeness. It is simply a Classified List of eight or nine thousand Educational Books now in use in this country, issued by nearly one hundred and fifty publishers.

It seems unnecessary to explain the plan of the Catalogue further than to say, that every subject will be found under the first alphabet in black type, and the inquirer is there referred to the proper heading under which he will find the titles. The subreferences, in plain capitals, refer to the sub-divisions of the heading under which the person is at the time looking. It may, perhaps, take a little turning over of leaves to get at the titles, but the inquirer is thus spared the trouble of deliberating under what heading to look for a book, perhaps to be more than once disappointed.

The Compiler, by the plan he has adopted, has endeavoured to obviate the difficulty previously alluded to-a difficulty that he has frequently experienced in consulting classified catalogues.

WALTER LOW.

The letters S.K. annexed to the title of a book indicate that a copy of that
work can be seen at the Library of the South Kensington Museum. This valuable and
unique Library of Educational Works is constantly being increased, and its extreme
importance to both Teachers and Learners is such, that a few years must necessarily add
largely to its proportions. The books thus marked can be examined at the Museum,
subject to the rules of the Department.
