It is the custom with some manufacturers to extend the fire-box under the grate, as the boiler is easier to make in this way, requiring no frame at bottom, but experience proves this addition of no practical service and very objectionable, as it becomes a receptacle for sediment. At a meeting of the Master Mechanics' Association of 1881, Button-set Riveting sample of sheets riveted together by different methods and cut to exhibit vertical sections showed that the button-set method was superior to all others known to them at that time. Clinch's Patent Rivet-set (see example No. 2 riveting above) has been approved by all master mechanics who have examined it.
