Q. 68. Are the elect only effectually called?

A. All the elect, and they only, are effectually called Pi although others may be and often are outwardly called by the miniftry of the word q, and have fome common operations of the Spiritr; who, for their wilful neglect and contempt of the grace offered to them, being juftly left in their unbelief, do never truly come to Jefus Christs.

Q.70. What is juftification?

A. Juftification is an act of God's free grace unto finners x, in which he pardoneth all their fin, accepteth and accounteth their perfons righteous in his fight y; not for any thing wrought in them, or done by them z, but only for the perfect obedi

believe not. For Jefus knew from the beginning, who they were that believed not, and who thould betray him. v. 65. And he faid, Therefore faid I unto you, that nó man can come unto me, except it were given unto him of my Father. Pfal. Ixxxi. 11. But my people would not hearken to my voice: and Ifrael would none of me. v. 12. So I gave them up unto their own hearts luits: and they walked in their own counfels.

69. Rom. viti. 30. Moreover, whom he did predeftinate, them he alfo called: and whom he called, them he alfo juftified: and whom he justified, them he alfo glorified.

his blood, to declare his righteous nefs for the remillion of fins that are past, through the forbearance of God. Rom. iv. 5. But to him that worketh not, but believeth on him that juftifieth the ungodly, his faith is counted for righteousness.

y 2 Cor. v. 19. To wit, that God was in Christ, reconciling the world unto himself, not imputing their trefpaffes unto them; and hath committed unto us the word of reconciliation. v. 21. For he hath made him to be fin for us, who knew no fin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him. Rom. iii. 22. Even the righteousness of God which is by faith of Jefus Chrift unto all, and upon all them that believe; for there is no difference. v. 24. Being juftified freely by his grace, through the redemption that is in Jefus Chrift: v. 25. Whom God hath fet forth to be a propitiation, through faith in his blood, to declare his righteousness for the remiffion of fins that are past, through the forbearance of God. v. 27. Where is boasting then? It is excluded. By what law? of works? Nay: but by the law of faith. v. 28. Therefore we conclude, that a man is juftified by faith without the deeds of the law.

z Tit. iii. 5. Not by works of

ence and full fatisfaction of Chrift, by God imputed to them a, and received by faith aloneb.

Q.71. How is juftification an act of God's free grace?

A. Although Christ, by his obedience and death, did make a proper, real, and full fatisfaction to God's juftice in the behalf of them that are justified c: yet in as much as God accepteth the fatisfaction from a furety, which he might have demanded of them; and did provide this furety, his own only Son d, imput

* Rom. v. 17. For if by one man's offence, death reigned by one: much more they who receive abundance of grace, and of the gift of righteoufnefs, fhall reign in life by one, Jefus Chriít. v. 18, Therefore as by the offence of one, judgment came upon all men to condemnation; even fo by the righteoufness of one, the free gift came upon all men unto juftification of life. v. 19. For as by one man's difobedience many were made finners: fo by the obedience of one, fhall maay be made righteous. Rom. iv. 6. Even as David alfo defcribeth the bleffedness of the man unto whom God imputeth righteoufnefs without works, v. 7. faying, Bleffed are they whofe iniquities are forgiven, and whofe fins are covered. v. 8. Bleffed is the man to whom the Lord will not impute fin.

Knowing that a man is not juftified by the works of the law, but by the faith of Jefus Chrift, even we have believed in Jefus Chrift; that we might be juftified by the faith of Chrift, and not by the works of the law: for by the works of the law fhall no flesh be justified. Phil. iii. 9. And be found in him, not having mine own righteousness, which is of the law, but that which is through the faith of Chrift, the righteousness which is of God by faith.

71. c Rom. v. 8. But God commendeth his love towards us, in that while we were yet finners, Christ died for us. v. 9. Much more then being now juftified by his blood, we fhall be faved from wrath through him. v. 10. For if when we were enemies, we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son: much more being reconciled, we shall be faved by his life. v. 19. For as by one man's disobedience many were made finners: fo by the obedience of one fhall many be made righteous.

Seventy weeks are determined upon thy people, and upon thy holy city, to finish the tranfgreffion, and to make an end of fins, and to make reconciliation for iniquity, and to bring in everlasting righteoufnefs, and to feal up the vifion and prophecy, and to anoint the most Holy. v. 26. And after threescore and two weeks fhall Meffiah be cut off, but not for himself: and the people of the prince that fhall come, fhall destroy the city and the fanctuary, and the end thereof fhall be with a flood, and unto the end of the war, defolations are determined. Ifa. liii. 4. Surely he hath born our griefs, and carried our forrows: yet we did efteem him ftricken, fmitten of God, and afflicted. v. 5. But he was wounded for our tranfgreflions, he was bruifed for our iniquities: the chaftifement of our peace was upon him, and with his ftripes we are healed.

v.

6. All we like sheep have gone aftray: we have turned every one to his own way, and the Lord hath laid on him the iniquity of us all. v. 10. Yet it pleafed the Lord to bruise him, he hath put him to grief: when thou fhalt make his foul an offering for fin, he fhall fee his feed, he fhall prolong his days, and the pleasure of the Lord fhall profper in his hand. v. 11. He shall fee of the travail of his foul and fhall be fatisfied; by his knowledge fhall my righteous fervant juftify many;

for he fhall bear their iniquities. v. 12. Therefore will I divide him a portion with the great, and he thall divide the spoil with the strong: because he hath poured out his foul unto death: and he was numbred with the tranfgreffors, and he bare the fin of many, and made interceffion for the tranfgreffors.
