THIS third, and concluding, volume of the EPOCHS OF AMERICAN HISTORY brings down the narrative to the end of President Cleveland's first administration, 1889. Each author has kept his own point of view, and no pains have been taken to harmonize divergences of judgment; but it is believed that all three substantially agree as to the underlying causes of the growth of our beloved country. The bibliographical apparatus of the third volume has been cast into fewer groups; much of the period covered is so recent that trustworthy detailed references are not to be found. The series is an honest effort to put before the American public, in brief compass, an account of the essentials in their own history, a history rich in striking events and in great characters, but richer as showing the success of a great nation in combining efficient government with a high degree of individual freedom.
