MIDWIVES AND DAIS.

Women who have a fair knowledge of English, but who have not passed the Entrance or its equivalents, will be admitted into the Eden Hospital to learn midwifery. The Government grant Rs. 20 per mensem towards the board, washing, &c., of each pupil and gives them free quarters. After a year's tuition and bedside practice, if found proficient, they will obtain a certificate qualifying them to practise midwifery. The fee for each certificate is Rs. 5. They are expected to do general nursing in the wards as well as midwifery.

20. Women who have not passed the Entrance or its equivalents, who can read and write Bengali, can be admitted into the Eden Hospital as pupil dais. The Government grants Rs. 6 each per mensem to eight pupils towards their board, washing, &c., and gives them free quarters. After 12 months' tuition, and beside practice, if found proficient, they will obtain a certificate qualifying them to practice midwifery. They are expected to do general nursing in the wards as well as midwifery.

Civil Engineering College, Sibpur.

AFFILIATED, 1880.

The College was opened on the 5th April, 1880, and is under the control of the Director of Public Instruction of Bengal. All classes of the community are admitted, and the course of instruction is adapted to the requirements of the following

(1) Civil Engineers and Surveyors.

(2) Foremen Mechanics (apprentices or Upper Subordinates).

Engineer Department.

For admission to the Engineer Department a student must have passed one of the following tests :

(1) The F.A. Examination of the Calcutta University, or a similar Dandard of any Indian University recognised by the Calcutta University, preference being given to those who have passed in Sanitary Science also. The candidate's age must be under 21 years.

(2) The B.A. Examination in the B. Course in Physics and Chemistry. The candidate's age must be under 23 years.

The number to be admitted each year is limited to 40. Six vacancies are reserved for candidates nominated by the Government of Burma and three vacancies for candidates nominated by the Government of Bengal. Candidates from Burma and Assam must apply for nominations to the Directors of Public Instruction of their respective Provinces. Application for admission, with registration fee of Re. 1 must reach the Principal not later than the 15th of May, and the session commences on the first Monday in June.

The College course is completed in four years. It includes 2 hours' work daily in the workshops for the first three years or until the student has passed the F.E. examination; the fifth or last year is spent on works in progress.

The tuition fee for this Department is Rs. 10 per mensem during the four years of instruction in class, no such fee being charged to any student after the completion of his theoretical course. The messing fees for those who reside upon the premises are,-for Christians, Rs. 20 plus Rs. 2 for rent and Re. 1 for electric lighting; for natives Rs. 7 plus Rs. 2 for rent, and Re. 1 for electric lighting.

Scholarships.

For the present one Junior Scholarship of the value of Rs. 20 a month, three of Rs. 15 a month, and six of Rs. 10, tenable for two years, will be given annually to students entering the first-year Engineer Class, who do not already hold University Scholarships. The Scholarships will be awarded by the Director of Public Instruction on the last day of June to the following classes of students in order :

(1) B.A.'s who have taken up the B. Course; (2) F.A. candidates.* Senior Scholarships of the same number and value will be competed for at the annual examination held in May for promotion of students from the second to the third-year class.

A gold medal will be awarded to the student who gains the highest marks in Mathematics at the examination for the B.E. degree. The holder of this

medal will be styled the "Ambica Charan Chaudhuri Medallist." A silver medal will be awarded to that candidate at the L.E. and B.E. examinations who, not having won the gold medal, obtains the highest number of marks. On the result of the University examination for degrees and licenses, two Graduate Mining Scholarships of Rs. 50 a month, tenable for two years, may be awarded, and a number of Graduate Scholarships of Rs. 50* a month, tenable for one year, varying in number according to the number of Mining Scholarships held during the year, will also be awarded, provided that the total number of scholarships, in the two classes together, does not exceed ten at any one time. The one-year scholarship-holders must serve continuously during that period in practical work under the supervision of the Public Works Department, and to the satisfaction of those under whose orders they may be placed. The Mining Scholarships would be tenable on a Mine approved by Government, and would be payable monthly on a report that the holders continued to work satisfactorily under the orders of the Mine Superintendent. The two years' service will be reckoned as one year on practical work under the supervision of the Public Works Department. Each of these years will extend over a session of nine months' service in a Mine, and three months' training in assaying, either under the Superintendent of the Mine or in the Sibpur College, as may hereafter be determined. Three Scholarships of the value of Rs. 50 per mensem, tenable for one year, will be awarded to the passed B.E. students who are selected to undergo a course of practical training under the Sanitary Engineer.

The Government of India guarantees each year one appointment in the Superior Provincial Service of the Public Works Department to a student of this College who is a statutory native of India.

One student annually is nominated by the Principal from amongst the newly-admitted students to undergo a two-years' course of training in Telegraphy at the Thomason College, Rurki, to qualify himself to appear at the competitive examination for one or two guaranteed appointments as apprentice in the Telegraph Department on a salary of Rs. 100 per month.

They are appointed as Assistant Superintendents, class VI, 2nd grade, on Rs. 225 a month, on proving their thorough fiftness within three years.

Apprentice Department.

Any candidate whose age is at least 15, and not more than 17 years, and who has passed the University Entrance Examination, or has passed by Standard VII of the Code of European Schools, is admitted without further test.

The number to be admitted each year is limited to 60. If there be accommodation, candidates who have passed the final examination of the B. Course of Bifurcation of studies of Zilla school may be admitted to the 2nd year class, and candidates of Affiliated Technical Schools who have passed the Sub-overseer examination held at the end of the 2nd year at the College may be admitted to the 3rd year class. Applications for admission with registration fee of Re. 1 must reach the Principal not later than the 6th of May; and the session commences on the first Monday in June.

The theoretical course, including three hours daily in the shops continued for three-and-a-half years, and the remaining year-and-a-half of the five years' apprenticeship is spent entirely in the workshops or dynamo-house. The tuition fee for this Department is Rs. 3 per mensem, no fee being charged to students on the Free and reduced fee lists.
