THE substance of the following course of Lectures was preached by the Author in the parish church of St. Peter in the East, Oxford, during the Holy Week of 1842. They have since been revised, with a view to publication, though, in some few instances, the allusions to the particular circumstances of the congregation to whom they were then addressed have been retained. To the Lecture for each day has been prefixed the Gospel narrative of the events to which allusion is made in it; and which originally formed the subject of a catechetical examination that preceded it. As the Lectures themselves are altogether of a practical character, Mr. Gresweli's harmony has been followed in the time and order of the events, without entering into any question of Biblical criticism.
