The appearance of the following compilation is the result of the approbation bestowed upon the Life of Dr. Johnson by Mr. Boswell, a work which has been declared to be the most interesting in the English language, and one which gives a better view of general literature than is to be obtained from any other work in existence.
The Table Talk of Dr. Johnson abounded in those excellencies by which we may conceive the conversation of a wise and good man to be characterised ; and it has been attempted in this volume to bring into a focus those admirable opinions and arguments on Life and Literature, Men and Manners, which evince that extent of learning, and depth of thinking, which acquired for this eminent man the appellation of “THE Colossus or ENGLISH LITERATURE.”
There is scarcely any topic of much interest to man, respecting which some important obsery'ation may not be found in this volume; and as
