Which were referred to the committee on credentials, who retired and after some time returned, and through their chairman, Mr. Rankin, made the following report:

Which report on motion of Mr. Davis of Clinton, was adopted, when the gentlemen named in the report came forward and took the oath of office, which was administered by the President. On motion of Mr. Davis of Polk, the Senate adjourned to 10 o'clock, A. M., to-morrow morning.

Journal read and approved.

Mr. Neal offered the following resolution:

Resolved, That the rules of the last Session of the Senate be adopted until further ordered. Carried.

Mr. Davis, of Polk, moved that the Senate proceed to the election of permanent officers.

Mr. Neal moved to amend by striking out the word permanent and inserting the word pro tem, which was lost.

The motion of Mr. Davis was adopted.

Mr. Davis, of Clinton, moved to proceed to the election of permanent Secretary.

Mr. Neal moved to amend by inserting the following after the

word Secretary: "And that the compensation shall not exceed four dollars per day."

Mr. Bailey called for the yeas and nays upon the amendment, which were ordered, and were as follows:

Mr. Sherradden nominated J. H. Sanders, of Keokuk County, for Secretary.

Mr. Pusey nominated J. Smith Hooten, of Pottawattamie county.

Mr. Saunders having received a majority of all the votes cast, was declared duly elected.

Mr. Sherradden moved to elect an assistant Secretary.

Mr. Drummond moved to amend by adding the words, "and that his compensation shall not exceed four dollars per day." Mr. Duncombe moved to amend by striking out "four" and inserting "three."

The ayes and nays were called for and ordered. Result as follows:

The yeas were-Senators Anderson, Angle, Ainsworth, Bailey, Bowen, Brown, Bussey, Buechel, Davis of Clinton, Duncombe, English, Gray, Green, Hagans, Henderson, Johnson Kent, Lewis,

So the motion to strike out and insert prevailed.

Mr. Powers nominated I. B. Parker for Assistant Secretary. Mr. Bussey nominated Mr. J. G. Phillips.

The roll was called with the following result: Those voting for Mr. Parker, were

Mr. Parker having received the majority of all the votes cast, was declared duly elected.

Mr. Neal offered the following as a substitute:

Resolved, That the election of Enrolling and Engrossing Clerks be postponed one week.

The yeas and nays were called for by Mr. Neal, and ordered. Result as follows:

So the substitute was lost.

Mr. Bussey moved to amend Mr. Davis' motion to elect an Engrossing Clerk, by adding the words, "and his compensation shall not exceed $2 50 per day."

The yeas and nays were called by Mr. Johnson and ordered. Result as follows:

Mr. Bowen moved to proceed to the election of Enrolling Clerk. Mr. Johnson moved to amend the motion of Mr. Bowen, so that it should read,

"Resolved, That we proceed to the election of an Enrolling Clerk, and that he receive no compensation for his services until he enters upon the actual discharge of the duties of that office."

Mr. Bowen offered the following as a substitute for the amendment offered by Mr. Johnson:

Resolved, That we proceed to the election of Enrolling Clerk, and that the same compensation be allowed him from the time of his election, as is provided for the Engrossing Clerk.

Mr. Johnson offered the following amendment to Mr. Bowen's substitute: "Strike out the words, from the time of his election, and insert, from the time he enters upon the actual discharge of the duties of that office."

Mr. Johnson called for the yeas and nays, which were ordered. Result as follows:
