Mr. Thompson nominated George G. Arndt, of Scott county, for Sergeant-at-Arms.

Mr. Taylor nominated Salmon Sharp, of Wayne county.

Mr. Brown nominated Mr. Hastings, of Black Hawk county, for Door-Keeper.

Mr. Neal nominated Mr. Walters, of Marion county.

Mr. Michael having a majority of all the votes cast, was declared duly elected.

Mr. McPherson nominated M. B. Noel, of Dallas county, for 1st Messenger, who was elected by acclamation.

On motion of Mr. McPherson, Mr. R. L. Davis, of Polk county, was elected 2d Messenger by acclamation.

On motion of Mr. Bowen, Mr. Willis D. Conard, of Johnson county, was elected 1st Paper-folder.

On motion of Mr, Davis, of Polk, Mr. George Peet, of Polk county, was elected 2d Paper-folder.

Mr. Bowen moved to dispense with the office of Post-Master. Mr. Scott moved to lay the motion on the table, which was lost. Mr. Bowen called the yeas and nays on his motion, which were ordered and were as follows:

Mr. Drummond offered the following:

Resolved, By the Senate, the House concurring, that E. H. Brown, of Polk county, be declared Post-Master of the Eighth General Assembly.

Mr. Neal offered the following substitute:

Resolved, That the Engrossing Clerk be required to perform the duties of Post-Master until otherwise ordered.

Mr. Saunders moved to lay the substitute on the table, upon which motion Mr. Neal called the yeas and nays, which were ordered and were as follows:

The motion to lay on the table prevailed.

Mr. Drummond's resolution was then adopted.

Mr. Bussey offered the following:

Resolved, That the pay of the Sergeant-at-Arms, Fireman, Assistant Fireman, Door Keeper, and Post Master, shall not exceed two dollars per day, and that the Messengers and Paper Folders shall not exceed one and a half dollars per day.

Mr. Saunders moved to lay the resolution on the table, upon which motion,

Mr. Wilson of Dubuque, called the yeas and nays, which were ordered, and were as follows:

The resolution was laid on the table.

Mr. Saunders moved that a committee of two be appointed to wait on the House and inform them that the Senate was organized and ready to proceed to business.

The motion prevailed, and Messrs. Saunders and Bailey were appointed said Committee.

Mr. Neal moved that a committee of two be appointed to wait upon the Governor and inform him that the Senate was organized, and ready to proceed to business.

The motion prevailed, and Messrs. Neal and Anderson were appointed said committee.

The committee appointed to inform the House of the organization of the Senate, reported that they had discharged their duty.

Mr. Davis of Clinton, 'moved to appoint a committee of three to revise the Rules of the Senate.

Mr. Pusey moved, as a substitute, that the Rules of the last Senate be adopted.

The substitute was adopted.

Mr. Davis of Clinton, offered the following:

Resolved, That the Clergymen of this city be requested to act as Chaplains to the Senate during the present session by such an arrangement as they may make among themselves.

Mr. Johnson offered the following amendment: "Provided they are to receive no compensation from the State Treasury for their services."

Mr. Johnson called the yeas and nays on his amendment, with the following result:

So the amendment was lost.

The original resolution was then adopted.
Mr. McPherson offered the following:

Resolved, That the Senate hold but one session per day, and that it commence at 9 o'clock A. M. Adopted.

Mr. Rankin offered the following:

Resolved, That a committee of three be appointed to make an arrangement with the Post Master of Des Moines for the payment of the postage of the Members and Secretary of the Senate of the 8th General Assembly.

Mr. Udell moved to amend by inserting the words, "and East Des Moines" after the word "Des Moines." Lost.

The resolution was then adopted, and Messrs. Rankin, Anderson, and Udell, were appointed said committee.

Mr. Taylor offered the following:

Resolved, That 100 copies of the Rules of the Senate be printed for the use of the Senate. Adopted.
