By the generosity of Lord Carew, and assistance from the Education Society, we had now the comfort of reading and spelling in classes from the same books, and of getting exercises in writing and arithmetic, done regularly, and with visible improvement. It was not without some little grating of cordage, and unnecessary expence of energy, that some of our new manoeuvres could be put in practice. A monitor, better used to guid e he plough, than to act as drill sergeant, had to give these orders, "right-turn-go," when he had his class arranged in line; but apparently overlooking the simple fact of his class not being composed of horses, he bade them horash instead of turn; and was surprised to hear a loud laugh, instead of seeing tem execute the motion, as docile and intelligent quadrupeds would have done if addressed in Irish. As teaching by monitors is but an unproductive sham, if the teacher's eyes are not ever-more wide awake to what is going on, a good look out was kept, and monitor's duty was, in every available case, done by the teacher: still the old-fashioned people of our district did not think the little master half the man he was, when...
