3 Evil thoughts shall shake the proud,
Racking doubt and restless fear;
And, amid the thunder-cloud,
Shall the Judge of man appear!

4 But, though from that awful face
Heav'n shall fade and earth shall fly,
Fear not ye, his chosen race,
Your redemption draweth nigh!

HYMN VI. L. M.

1 THE
HE Lord will come! the earth shall
quake,

The hills their ancient seat forsake,
And with'ring, from the vault of night
The stars withdraw their feeble light.

2 The Lord will come! but not the same
As once in lowly form He came―
A silent lamb, to slaughter led,

The bruis'd, the suff'ring, and the dead : 3 The Lord will come! a dreadful form, With wreath of flame, and robe of storm, On cherub wings, and wings of wind, Anointed Judge of human-kind.

4 Can this be He, who wont to stray
A pilgrim on the world's highway,
By power oppress'd, and mock'd by pride?
Can this be He-the crucified?

5 His impious foes in vain will fly;
In vain to rocks for shelter cry!
His saints, victorious o'er the tomb,
Shall sing for joy-The Lord is come!

HYMN VII. P. M.

O, He comes, in clouds descending!
Once for ransom'd sinners slain ;-
Thousand thousand saints attending,
Swell the triumph of his train :
Hallelujah! Hallelujah!

Christ is come to earth again.

2 Ev'ry eye shall now behold Him,
Rob'd in dreadful majesty ;
They who set at nought, and sold him,
Pierc'd and nail'd him to the tree,
Deeply wailing, deeply wailing,

Shall the true Messiah see.

3 When the solemn trump has sounded,
Heav'n and earth shall flee away;
All who hate him must, confounded,
Hear the summons of that day :
Come to judgment! come to judgment !
Come to judgment! come away!
4 Now Salvation, long expected,
See in solemn pomp appear;
All his saints, by man rejected,
Rise and meet Him in the air!
Hallelujah Hallelujah!

See the day of God appear!

HYMN VIII. P. M.

GREAT God! what do I see and hear—

The end of things created!

The Judge of Mankind doth appear,
On clouds of glory seated!

The trumpet sounds-the graves restore
The dead, which they contain'd before!
Prepare, my soul! to meet Him.

HYMN X. C. M.

Hal.

SAVIOUR, whom this holy morn
Gave to our world below,

To mortal want and labour born,
And more than mortal woe!

2 Incarnate Word, by ev'ry grief,
By each temptation tried;
Who liv'd to yield our ills relief,
And to redeem us died!

3 If gaily cloth'd, and proudly fed,
In dang'rous wealth we dwell,
Remind us of Thy manger-bed,
And lowly cottage cell.

4 If press'd by poverty severe,
În envious want we pine,
O may thy Spirit whisper near,
How poor a lot was thine.

5 Through fickle Fortune's various scene, From sin preserve us free;

1

Like us Thou hast a mourner been;
May we rejoice in Thee!

HIGH

HYMN XI. C. M.

IGH let us swell our tuneful notes,
And join th' angelic throng;

For angels no such love have known
To wake a cheerful song.

2 Good-will to sinful man is shewn,
And peace on earth is giv❜n:

For lo! th' Incarnate Saviour comes,
Immanuel from heav'n;

3 Truth, Mercy, Love, and Righteousness, His rising beams adorn :

Let heav'n and earth in concert join—
"To us a child is born!"

4 Glory to God in highest strains,
In highest worlds be paid;
His glory by our lips proclaim'd,
And by our lives display'd!

5 O may we reach those blissful realms Where Christ exalted reigns,

1

And learn of the celestial choir
Their own immortal strains!

HYMN XII. C. M.

HARK, the glad sound! the Saviour The Saviour promis'd long! [comes,

Let ev'ry heart exult with joy,

Let every voice be song.

2 He comes the pris'ners to release,
In Satan's bondage held;

The gates of brass before him break,
The iron fetters yield.

3 He comes, from thickest clouds of sin
To clear the mental ray,

And on the eye long clos'd in night
To pour celestial day.

4 He comes, the broken heart to bind,
The wounded soul to cure,

And, with the treasures of His
To bless the humble poor.

grace,

5 Our glad Hosannas, Prince of Peace, Thy birth aloud proclaim;

1

And heav'n's exalted arch resounds
Thine everlasting Name.

HYMN XIII. L. M.

HE comes! He comes! a radiant light
Around its beaming lustre sheds:

The shepherds, watching in the night,
With awe and wonder bow their heads.
