PSALM III. L. M.

GOD! how constant is thy love!
Thy gifts are ev'ry ev'ning new;
And morning mercies from above
Gently distil, like early dew.

2 Thou spread'st the curtain of the night, Great Guardian of our sleeping hours; Thy sov'reign word restores the light, And quickens all our slumb'ring powers. 3 Thine arm sustain'd us while we slept, Else had our eyelids closed in death; Our life in safety still is kept,

And still we draw our wonted breath. 4 That life we yield to thy command; To Thee we consecrate our days; Perpetual blessings from thy hand Demand perpetual songs of praise.

IN

PSALM IV. c. M.

N vain the thoughtless world inquires,
Forgetful of their God,

Who will supply their vain desires,

Or shew them earthly good.

2 Through the wide compass of the earth Their restless wishes rove,

In search of honour, wealth, and mirth,
The idols of their love.

B

3 But oft these shadowy joys elude
Their most intense pursuit ;
Or, if they seize the fancied good,
There's poison in the fruit.

4 From this vain world, Lord, wean our love,
Set our affections right;
May we, by faith, seek joys above,
And walk no more by sight!

PSALM V. Version 1. C. M., D.

ON

N Thee, O God of Hosts, on Thee
We wait for hallowing grace;

None without holiness may see

The glories of thy face.

Before that eye, whose beam severe
Explores the heart within,

How loathsome must the thought appear
That clings to secret sin.

2 But we, O Lord, in humble prayer,
Within thy temple-gate,

Though most unworthy of thy care,
With trembling hope will wait.
Blest Spirit! whose renewing grace
To humble prayer is giv'n,

O fit me for this holy place,

And lift my soul to heav'n.

PSALM V. Version 2. C. M.

1 LORD! in the morning thou shalt hear My voice ascending high;

To Thee will I direct my prayer,
To Thee lift up mine eye.

2 Oft to thy house will I resort,
To praise thy goodness there;
I will frequent thy holy court,
And worship in thy fear.

3 From vanity, O turn mine eyes!
Let no corrupt design,
selfish wish arise,

Nor any

Within this heart of mine.

4 O may thy Spirit guide my feet
In ways of truth and grace,
Make ev'ry path of duty straight
And plain before my face!

PSALM V. Version 3. L. M.
(From "The Spirit of the Psalms."*)
S, soaring from the waving corn,
The tuneful lark salutes the morn,
So let our souls from slumber rise,
To pay our early sacrifice!

2 In humble trust, O Lord, we come
To worship in thy sacred dome,
Again thy hallow'd courts we throng,
To pour the consecrated song.

3 O Lord, let all who love thy Name
In joyful notes that love proclaim;
Secure that Thy Almighty power
Shall be their shield in danger's hour.

* These copious Extracts from The Spirit of the Psalms" are inserted by the liberal permission of the Editor of that very pleasing and valuable Volume.

PSALM VIII. Version 1. L. M.

TERNAL God! thro' earth's wide frame
How vast Thy pow'r, how great Thy Name!
Thy reign o'er distant worlds extends,
Thy glory highest heav'n transcends.

2 When wrapt in thought, with wakeful eye
I view the wonders of the sky,
Whose frame Thy hand, above our head,
In rich magnificence hath spread—

3 0 what is man, that in Thy care
His humble lot should find a share?
Or what the son of man, that Thou
Thus to his wants Thine ear should'st bow?

4 Made subject to his rule by Thee,
To him all nature bends the knee:
Eternal God! through earth's wide frame
How vast thy pow'r, how great Thy Name!

PSALM VIII.

Version 2. C. M.

(From "The Spirit of the Psalms.")

I JEHOVAH, Lord of power and might,
How glorious is Thy Name!

The blaze of day, the pomp of night,
Thy Majesty proclaim.

2 Lord! what is man-lost, fallen man-
That he Thy care should prove,

That Thou for him should'st deign to plan Such mighty acts of love!
