The value of this important alkaloid as a local anesthetic in eye surgery and other operations is well known, and does not require an extended notice here. The solutions preferred are those of 2% and 4% of the Hydrochlorate. Some of its other uses are given below. Specify "McK. & R." Solution and Oleate.

The notes are taken from actual cases reported in foreign and domestic journals of high standing. Other notes are given in the following pages:

BURNS, &c. When applying Cocaine to ulcers, burns, etc., see that the surface is as dry as possible, that nothing interferes with the intimate contact of the solution. A good method of application is to cut a piece of fine linen, say about the size necessary, and on this to apply the solution; with care, very little of the solution will be wasted.

IN CHORDEE, accompanying gonorrhoea, two successful cases are recorded in which ten drops of the 4% solution was diluted with 30 drops of water, and an injection made into the urethral canal-and retained for a few minutes.

IN CIRCUMCISION.-Four minims of a 4% solution, injected through the foreskin at 4 different points, produced complete anæsthesia all around in about 12 minutes. Operation was painless.

IN CORYZA with severe frontal headache, copious lacrymation and entire stoppage of both nostrils, a piece of cotton-wool soaked in 4% solution was inserted into each nostril. After removal in a few minutes, the passages were found entirely free. The relief was permanent.

IN HÆMORRHOIDS of a woman of 50, one minim of the 4% solution was injected into each pile (6) at the muco-cutaneous junction, after which the entire surface of the mucous membrane at the lower part of the rectum was painted over with a like solution. Operation almost painless.

IN LITHOTRITY.-The bladder was injected with oz. of 4% solution, and the operation was begun and completed painlessly in a quarter of an hour.

IN NEURALGIA involving the area supplied by the supraorbital nerve a hypodermic injection of the 4% solution made deeply into the immediate vicinity of the supraorbital foramen, cut short the attack in 15 minutes.

IN PHTHISIS, as an inhalation, five minims of the 4% solution, with a like amount of chloroform were dropped upon an inhaler and thus taken at bed time. In two cases the patient succeeded in getting a better night than was given by any other method tried.

IN TEETHING OF INFANTS a 4% solution rubbed on the mucous membrane firmly by means of absorbent cotton, has succeeded in quieting the pain and giving quiet sleep within a few minutes.

IN URETHRAL spasm in the female. The spasms lasted as a rule for 48 hours, with considerable pain and a desire to urinate. The catheter did not pass. Threequarters of a grain of Cocaine was then dissolved in ounce of water and injected into the urethra as far as the catheter would go. In about 5 minutes the catheter again introduced passed with ease into the bladder.

Internally, Cocaine has been administered in sleeplessness, vomiting of pregnancy, etc. It does not appear to have produced toxic effects in doses of three grains to the Muriate.

McK. & R.'s Granule of 1-10 grain of Muriate Cocaine is the best form for internal administration, as the effect is localized.

Note.-McK. & R.'s Oleate of Cocaine (five per cent) will be found very valuable in many cases of skin disease, in operative dental surgery, and in the pain occurring in the gums, during and after extraction of a tooth.

When catheters, bougies and other instruments are annointed with it, before introduction, the pain is very materially lessened, if not altogether obviated.

When the vials in the case are emptied, they can be refilled by your druggist, or we can mail direct from New York. In all cases McK. & R.'s preparation should be specified. We manufacture the Alkaloid, Hydrochlorate, Citrate, Oleate, and Salicylate of Cocaine. This case may be returned to us by mail, filled as desired and returned. Case No.1 contains two oz. g.s. vials, McK. & R. 4% solution Muriate; Case No. 2, two oz. g. 8. vials, 2% solution; Case No. 3, one -oz. vial each 2% and 4% solution. In Case No. 5 the glass stoppers are elongated, reaching to the bottom of the vials, and forming a very convenient dropping tube.

In ordering, we would request the Profession to specify "MoK, & R."

PIL. WARBURG'S TINCTURE, (representing one drachm each).

There is so much testimony as to the extraordinary virtues of Warburg's

Tincture in Malarial Fevers, that its powers can scarcely be questioned. At

first a proprietary medicine, its formula was afterwards revealed by a vol-

untary act of its inventor, Dr. CARL WARBURG, late of Vienna, but now of

London. (U. S. D., 1883.)

Our Warburg's Tincture is prepared in accordance with the original

formula, except that Confection of Theriac Ph. G. is substituted for Confec-
tion Damocratis-an unofficinal and impracticable preparation, some ingre-
dients of which are nowhere obtainable.

The pill form is the most eligible for its administration, as it may be so
taken without offense to the palate.

COCAINE

BELOW, AND AT SUCH LOW PRICES TO THE TRADE, THAT PHYSICIANS MAY IN-
CLUDE IT IN THEIR ARMAMENTARIUM AT LITTLE EXPENSE.

Paralysis, Epilepsy. St. Vitus Dance, Alcoholism, the MORPHIA or OPIUM HABIT, Defective or Deficient Menstruation (from Nervous Debility or Anæmic Condition of the System), Coldness of the Extremities, Sleeplessness, Nerve Exhaustion, owing to overwork, either Phy. sical or mental, Cramps, Constipation, and in the Convalescent Stages of all Acute Diseases. DOSE, from ten to thirty drops or more, as often as may be indicated to meet the urgency of the case. Would especially recommend its administration in HOT WATER during the day (as its action is so much quicker), and in COLD WATER at night on retiring, as it has a more extended influence. When given in hot water its action is almost instantaneous. An overdose causes pain at base of the brain.
