rejoiced; my flesh alfo fhall reft in hope for why? thou shall not leave my foul in hell, neither fhalt thou fuffer thy holy one to fee corruption; thou shalt fhew me the path of life: in thy prefence is the fulness of joy, and at thy right hand there is pleasure for evermore.

Mofes. Daniel prophecies the death of the Meffiah after three-fcore and two weeks, Meffiah fhall be cut off. David gives us his refurrection; thou shalt not leave my soul in hell, neither fhalt thou fuffer thy holy one to fee corruption. Allo in this as in his other pfalm, his triumphal afcenfion: thou fhalt fhew me the path of life; in thy prefence is the fulness of joy, and at thy right hand there is pleasure evermore. Thefe were myfteries until now, I confefs myfelf totally ignorant.

Boy. Pfalm 110. The Lord faid unto my Lord, fit thou on my right hand, until I make thy enemies thy foot-ftool: the Lord fhall fend the rod of thy power out of Sion; be thou ruler even in the midst among thine enemies. In the day of thy power fhall the people offer thee free-will offerings with an holy worship; the dew of thy birth is of the womb of the morning: the Lord fwore and will not repent. Thou art a priest for ever after the order of Melchifedech: the Lord upon thy right hand, fhall wound even kings in the day of his wrath: he fhall judge among the heathen, he fhall fill the places with the dead bodies, and finite afunder the heads over divers countries; he fhall drink of the brook in the way, therefore fhall he lift up his head.

Mofes. The pfalm before us is a further teftimony and confirmation of the royal prophet o the divinity of the Meffiah; for David was a great king, he had many nations tributary to him, himself acknowledged no fuperior but his God, whofe darling he was; Meffiah, as man, he knew was to be his fon, confequently not intitled to his homage; but he knew alfo that he was his God, in quality of which he pours forth his foul in praise and adoration, which breathe throughout his pfalms: in this pfalm is declared the prieftly office of the Meffiah, not according to the order of Aaron which was inftituted in the old covenant, but according to Melchifedech, to whom we read in Genefis, our father Abraham paid tithes, and received his bleffing, being the priest of Almighty God; fo that the new worship or covenant will be different, dating, and taking its effect from the death of the Meffiah, who, according to Daniel, is to be cut off, but not for himself.

Alfo the Pfalm 40, Sacrifice and oblation thou wouldst not: but a body thou haft fitted to me: Holocaufts for fin did not please thee. I hen faid I, behold I come in the head of the book it is written of me, that I should do thy will, O God. Here we are told of the infufficiency of the old covenant and mode of worship, and that the Almighty would bring and confirm the new, which, according to Daniel, was confirmed with many and established in the middle. of the feventieth week by the Melfiah when he was cut off, and that the old worship should cease, as we are witneffes this day. Near two thoufand

thousand years has this prophecy been accomplifhed. Genefis 14th chapter. And Melchifedech, king of Salem, brought forth bread and wine: and he was priest of the Most High God. And be bleffed him and faid, bleffed be Abram of the Moft High God, poffeffor of heaven and earth: and bleed be the Most High God, who hath delivered thine enemies into thy bands: and Abram gave Melchifedech tithes of all. This fcripture points out Melchifedech to be priest of Almighty God and his priesthood, prior to that of Aaron. Alfo, according to the Pfalm we just quoted, the type of the Meffiah, whofe worfhip of offering is bread and wine, which will take place and fucceed the old facrifices and worfhip of Ifrael. As the Pfalm we a little before mentioned teftifies, that the old worship was not equivalent, the 110th Pfalm gives a farther teftimony of the Divinity of the Meffiah, in the following verfe:

In the day of thy power shall the people offer thee free-will offerings with an holy worship: the dew of thy birth is of the womb of the morning. So that the oblation or worship of the new covenant will be offered to the Son equally with the Father, which would be the height of blafphemy, were the Son not God. I now am no Jonger ignorant of the woman's feed crushing the head of the ferpent, the devil, making reparation, and reconciling man with his God, and replacing him in his first birthright, which by feduction Satan, that old ferpent, tempted and effected his fall. Here the Pfalm refers us how neceffary and proper it was for him to take

our nature and offer it up a facrifice to the Divine juftice, to blot out and cancel the debt, which none could effect but the Divinity. 40th Pfalm, Sacrifice and oblation thou wouldst not, but a body thou haft fitted to me: Holocaufts for fin did not pleafe thee. Then faid I, Behold, I am in the bead of the book. Genefis 3d chapter, 15th verfe, It is written of me, that I should do thy will, O God. The mystery of the plural number in the Divinity, in the 1ft chapter of Genefis, the Spirit of God moved upon the waters, and God faid, Let Us make man in Our Image, after our Likeness, becomes familiar and clear.

Boy. Malachi 1ft chapter. From the rifing of the fun even unto the going down of the fame, My Name fhall be great among the Gentiles: and in every place incenfe fhall be offered unto My Name, and a pure offering: for My Name fhall be great among the Gentiles, faith the Lord of Hofts. Mofes. Malachi was the laft of our prophets. By this prophecy a new fcene is opened, in which is prefented the completion and end of the old and bringing in of the new covenant and worship. The old was confined to the temple and Jewish nation period, until the Meffiah. The new is univerfal, in time, place and people. From the rifing of the fun to the Jetting of the fame My Name is great among the Gentiles, faith the Lord of Hofts; and in every place incenfe fhall be, and a pure offering. And this, according to other prophecies, as long as the fun and moon endure. These are the words and promife repeatedly confirmed

and irrevocably fealed and bound by the oath of the Eternal God. Here we fee prefented in one point of view the infinite Majesty and goodness of our God, who beftows unintermitted bleffings on man. Shall man, ungenerous creature, continue unfaithful to the invitations. of his God? No: but where is Ifrael to feek, in what place is this pure offering immolated? there Ifrael will repair and invoke her God, and join in offering this univerfal and pure facrifice to her Lord.

Boy. What you covet is the chriftian facrifice inftituted by Jefus Chrift, who is the promised Meffiah of your fcriptures.

Mofes. This cannot be; it is impoffible; Ifrael can never fubmit. No, this will not come to pass. One the detefts, as most infamous to carefs and offer facrifice to. The height of madness, deteftable, infamous.

Boy. Had the Jews acknowledged Jefus, Chrift, in that cafe He could not be the Meffiah. Their rejection, &c. prove the fcriptures true and Him the Meffiah.

Mofes. This matter fhall be difcuffed.

Scene changes. Luther's apartment. Luther in bed.

Luther. O my belly, you implacable foe,
Hungry monster, to the grave you shall go ;
Infatiable, never to be appeas'd,

Frying-pan like, but, whilst thou art greas'd.
