Calv. We do not, being Arians, Melf. You allow their condemnation? Calv. We do, to escape the odium, but are one in principle, but refined

Me. You acknowledge the fcriptures?

Calv. Both Jewish and chriftian, in spirit, The latter we affign to the outcaft, as a nut, we feed on the kernel and tofs the fhells to thẹ fwine or carnal.

Meff. You ftudy the fcriptures?
Calv. From my childhood.

[ocr errors]

Melf. You are not ignorant, that I am head of the catholic church, and my fpirit her inft uctor, and that both fcriptures are full of her praifes, and eternal union with me, and that falvation is to be feeked for in her union.

Me. I convinced you that your charges against my church, or covenant, are levelled against me.

Luth.& Calv. You are our Saviour and Redeemer.

Me. I am neither; but will judge your blafphemies.

Luth. & Calu. Our faith aud hope are fixed in you.

Meff. Schifm and herefy.

Luth. & Calv. Reformers and reftorers of your church.

Mef. Obdurate and rebellious mifcreants. Luth. & Caly. Your new covenant became infamous.

Meff. It is not poffible but there will be fcandals; but woe to them that fcandalize

them,

them, better a mill-ftone were tied about their necks and they caft into the deep.

Luth. & Calv. We expected a good work, to beat down the fynagogue and feat of Satan. Me. You judge yourselves by condemning the innocent and your judges.

Luth. & Calv. Are the court of Rome our judges?

Meff. The catholic church, in communion. with the chair of St. Peter, are your judges, by whom you are under the fentence of con❤ demnation.

Luth. & Calv. For fighting your battles. Meff. Schifm and herefy proceed and are nourifhed by the father of lies.

Luth. & Calv. Can idolatry and superstition be fuch?

Me. What you term idolatry and fuperfti tion is duty, love, obedience and devotion, from its eftablishment to the present time and will remain.

Luth. & Calv. There was no images, praying for the dead, facrifice of the Mafs, tranfubftantiation, relics, feven facraments, &c. in the three firft ages.

Me. What knowledge have you of the chriftian religion of the three firft ages?

Luth. & Calv. What we are told by our ancestors, that the reformation is the religion of the three first in its purity.

Meff. Have you not read the church hiftory of thofe early ages?

Luth. & Calv. Nothing more than the fcrip

"tures.

Me

Meff. It is prefumption to teach a matter you are ignorant of: Read Eufebius, Cyprian, and other authors, tranflated by your Proteftant father, and you will find that the church of the three firft ages, which you all agree to be in its pure ftate, was the fame religion of popery taught now, and will remain pure and intire, until the general judgment, by which you will all be tried, her marks as your creeds will direct you. One, holy, catholic, apoftolic; these are her marks, and whoever are not in her communion, whole and undefiled, without doubt fhall perish everlastingly. These are the words of her creeds, acknowledged by the reformation, and moft undoubtedly will be tried by. Out of your own mouths I judge you, you wicked fervants.

Luth. & Calv. If this be fo, ftrange it is our first apostles, with a crowd that followed their example, who were all educated Roman Catholics, as we all agree there was no other church, that all the fubjects of the different ftates were trained up in; all monuments of thofe times bearing witnefs to this truth, that they fhould quit their Catholic mother, as we can call her no other, if he was not become adultrefs, and make a new religion to ferve you in true piety, purity, holiness, fulness of true elevation, devoting herself wholly in fpiris to your fervice, in the inward man, laying afide the old man and old woman (the papistry), unless they thought, as we do, that it was rendering you fervice, and fulfilling our duty.

Meff

Meff. Your Proteftants from their firft ap pearance have acknowledged the neceffity of producing the four marks of the creeds, and complying fully to the injunctions therein expreffed.

Luth. & Calv. We in our churches and private prayers are careful to fay the creed.

[ocr errors]

Meff. Repeat your marks or pretenfions as members to my church.

Luib. & Calv. I believe one, holy, catholic and apoftolic church.

Me. Explain yourselves on the firft.

Luth. & Calv. One church, founded by Jefus Chrift.

Meff. Go on with the fecond head.

Luth. & Calv. Holy, receiving her doctrine and miffion from our Meffiah.

Meff. Proceed with the third article. Luib. & Calv. Catholic, or general church, from her firft eftablishment.

Meff. Fourth and laft head.

Luth. & Calv. Delivered by our Meffiah to his apoftles, and tranfmitted by their fucceffors

to us.

Meff. This is the Catholic Roman church. Luth. & Calv. That, according as we have been inftructed, teaches damnable doctrines.

Mell. If the teaches damnable doctrines, myfelf and the Holy Ghoft, are the teachers of thefe pernicious errors.

Luth. & Calv. We cannot fuppofe the God of truth can be the inftructor of wickedness, Meff Was you to fuppofe this blafphemy, it would be not more wicked than your other tenets,

tenets, which proceed and iffue from the fame cause or spirit.

Luth. & Calv. We fhall be laughed to fcorn to return to popery.

Meff. As I told the Jews, fo I now tell you, your falvation is in your own hands; you have life and death fet before you, take your choice.

t

Luth. & Calv. We had rather die than be papifts; we therefore give up the creeds, and her four marks to the papifts, and remain reformers without marks.

Melf. The apoftles creed was in being 1500, years and the other two 1200 years, before the Proteftant church had a being. You therefore act truly in excluding yourfelves from Chriftianity.

Calv. Our Calviniftical brethren have laboured for many years to have the two laft creeds abolished throughout the whole proteftant world, as it gives the lie to the whole reformation, and laughs us to fcorn.

Mef. Your non-compliance, disobedience, or doubt of one article of the Catholic Church in communion with the chair of Peter, or her three creeds, is a total exclufion of the whole Chriftian religion.

Luth. & Calv. We exclude and reject popery.

Me. Touching the respect paid to images? Luth. & Calv. All Proteftants confider a breach of the fecond commandment.

Mell. I gave my commandments to Mofes ; at the fame time I gave him a commandment to make
