THE FIRST VOLUME.

THE cafes, which conftitute the first part of this volume were published as foon as they could conveniently be prepared for the prefs *. The author propofed by this means, to avail himfelf of the judg ment of the profeffion upon his firft labors, and to derive, from the difcovery of the defects in a fmall portion of his work, fome improvement of what remained. It is neceffary to inform the reader what has been the refult of this experiment. He will obferve that in the second part, a fuller detail is given than in the first, of the proceedings of the committees, of the circumstances and fituation of the parties, and of the particular ftage of the trial, in which each queftion arofe. This has been the only material alteration hitherto fuggefted. It may not be improper here alfo to mention, that in the fecond part, the author has taken notice of the leave given by the Houfe of Commons to particular members, to abfent them
