MAINE WOMAN'S CHRISTIAN
TEMPERANCE UNION

-HELD IN

THE HIGH STREET CONGREGATIONAL
CHURCH, AUBURN, MAINE

Convention, Wednesday, Sept. 25, 9.30 A. M.

The Thirty-eighth Annual Convention of the Maine Woman's Christian Temperance Union was opened in the High street Congregational church at 9.30 by a service of praise and prayer led by Miss Harriet J. Loring.

The church was beautifully decorated with flowers, autumn leaves, mottoes and banners.

At ten o'clock the business meeting of the convention was called to order by the President, Mrs. Lillian M. N. Stevens. "How firm a foundation" was sung, Mrs. Sarah Hall Herrick, the musical director, leading. The Crusade Psalm was read in concert and the Crusade Hymn, "Give to the winds thy fears" was sung. Prayer was offered by Mrs. Hannah J. Bailey, National Superintendent Department of Peace and Arbitration.

The roll-call showed many of the county presidents and superintendents present.

The following committees were appointed:

On Courtesies - Mrs. Althea G. Quimby, Mrs. Abbie Peaslee, Mrs. Daisy Catland, Mrs. L. H. Wight.

On Credentials Miss Isabel H. Stickney, Miss Alice A. Clough, Mrs. Fannie B. Damon, Mrs. Susan J. Fernald.

Mrs. Stevens presented her recommendations for the coming year, to the convention. She emphasized the need of renewed effort in organization, education and law enforcement. Moved, by Mrs. Effie M. Lawrence that this splendid presentation of facts, outline of plans, and words of inspiration and encouragement be accepted by a rising vote of thanks and referred to the Executive Committee. Carried.

Mrs. Lawrence was introduced to the convention as the new president of Washington County.

A telegram was received from the state conventions in session in South Carolina, Delaware, Virginia, Minnesota, Oklahoma and New York.

Voted to respond with greetings from this convention. Voted also to send greetings to New Hampshire convention, in session at Jefferson and to Missouri.

Messages of love and sympathy were sent to Mrs. Margaret T. W. Merrill, to Mrs. Olive Stevens Hanson and Mrs. Adelaide S. Johnston and letters to Mrs. Sadie French, Mrs. E. M. Blanchard, Mrs. George W. Wagg and Mrs. Lottie Knapp.

The report of Miss Isabel H. Stickney, corrresponding secretary, followed and showed a gain in many lines of work. The report was accepted by a rising vote of thanks

Mrs. Emma E. Watts presented the financial report of W. C. T. U. headquarters. Voted that the report be accepted with thanks. Noon tide prayer was offered by Mrs. L. W. Clark of Auburn. Miss Elizabeth P. Gordon was introduced and made a member of the convention.

Mrs. Peaslee gave her report on Hygienic Reform and Heredity, Mrs. Juliette H. Oakes reported Medical Temperance.

Mrs. Mary V. Pierce reported Sunday School work.

Miss Jessie M. Dodge reported on Temperance literature and the financial standing of this department. The auditor's report was read

and accepted. Voted that the report of Miss Dodge be accepted. Miss Mary L. French reported Press work.

Mrs. Fannie B. Damon, Parliamentary law.

Rev. Mr. Ufford, author of "Throw Out the Life-line," was introduced and after remarks explanatory of his reason for writing this inspiring song, sang it, the audience joining in the chorus.

Rev. Mr. Woodin, pastor of this church, who was unable to be present in the evening, was introduced and gave a welcome to the convention from the churches,

Rev. D. F. Faulkner of the Methodist church and Capt. Wood of the Salvation Army were also presented to the convention.

Mrs. Bunker, a former president of Somerset county, but now of California, came to the platform and spoke of her pleasure at being again in Maine and in a state convention.

The reports of Mrs. Gertrude Stevens Leavitt, editor of the "Star in the East" and of Miss Dodge, financial manager were presented. Voted that a rising vote of thanks be given Mrs. Leavitt and Miss Dodge for their success in making the paper so helpful and interesting. The doxology was sung and benediction pronounced by Rev. D. F. Faulkner.

Convention adjourned.
