living God, that thou tell us whether thou be the Christ, the Son of God. Jesus saith unto him, Thou hast said, Matt. xxvi. 63, 64. Again the High Priest asked him, and said unto him, Art thou the Christ, the Son of the

Καὶ ἕτερα πολλὰ βλασφημοῦντες ἔλεγον Blessed? And Jesus said, I am, εἰς αὐτόν.

And many other things blasphemously spake they against him.

VER. 66.

Καὶ ὡς ἐγένετο ἡμέρα, συνήχθη τὸ Πρεσ. βυτέριον τοῦ λαοῦ, ̓Αρχιερεῖς τε καὶ Γραμματεῖς, καὶ ἀνήγαγον αὐτὸν εἰς τὸ συνέδριον ἑαυτῶν, λέγοντες·

And as soon as it was day, the elders of the people and the Chief Priests and the Scribes came together, and led him into their council, saying,

[Now the Chief Priests and elders, and all the council, sought false witness against Jesus, to put him to death: But found none: yea, though many false witnesses came; yet found they none. At the last came two false witnesses, And said, This fellow said, I am able to destroy the temple of God, and to build it in three days. And the High Priest arose, and said unto him, Ånswerest thou nothing? what is it which these witness against thee? But Jesus held his peace, Matt. xxvi. 59-63. And the Chief Priests and all the council sought for witness against Jesus, to put him to death: and found none. For many bare false witness against him, but their witness agreed not together. And there arose certain, and bare false witness against him, saying, We heard him say, I will destroy this temple that is made with hands, and within three days I will build another made without hands. neither so did their witness agree together, Mark xiv. 55—59.]

VER. 67.

But

Εἰ σὺ εἶ ὁ Χριστὸς ἡ εἰπὲ ἡμῖν. Εἶπε δὲ αὐτοῖς· Ἐὰν ὑμῖν εἴπω, οὐ μὴ πιστεύ

σητε

Art thou the Christ? tell us. And

Mark xiv. 61, 62, The High Priest then asked Jesus of his disciples, and of his doctrine, John xviii. 19.]

VER. 68.

Ἐὰν δὲ καὶ ἐρωτήσω, οὐ μὴ ἀποκριθῆτέ μοι, ἢ ἀπολύσητε.

And if I also ask you, ye will not answer me, nor let me go.

VER. 69.

̓Απὸ τοῦ νῦν ἔσται ὁ υἱὸς τοῦ ἀνθρώπου. καθήμενος ἐκ δεξιῶν τῆς δυνάμεως τοῦ

Θεοῦ.

a Hereafter shall the Son of man bsit on the right hand of the power of God.

[Nevertheless I say unto you, Hereafter shall ye see the Son of man sitting on the right hand of power, and coming in the clouds of heaven, Matt. xxvi. 64. And ye shall see the Son of man sitting on the right hand of power, and coming in the clouds of heaven, Mark xiv. 62.]

VER. 70.

Εἶπον δὲ πάντες· Σὺ οὖν εἶ ὁ υἱὸς τοῦ Θεοῦ ; Ὁ δὲ πρὸς αὐτοὺς ἔφη· Ὑμεῖς λέγετε, ὅτι ἐγώ εἰμι.

Then said they all, Art thou then a the Son of God? And he said unto them, Ye say that I am.

VER. 71.

Οἱ δὲ εἶπον· Τί ἔτι χρείαν ἔχομεν μαρ τυρίας ; αὐτοὶ γὰρ ἠκούσαμεν ἀπὸ τοῦ στό ματος αὐτοῦ.

And they said, What need we any further witness? for we ourselves have heard of his own mouth.

CHAP. XXIII.—VER. 1. Καὶ ἀναστὰν ἅπαν τὸ πλῆθος αὐτῶν, ἤγαγεν αὐτὸν ἐπὶ τὸν Πιλάτον.

And the whole multitude of them arose, and led him unto Pilate.

[And when they had bound him, they led him away, and delivered him to Pontius Pilate the governor, Matt.

xxvii. 2. And bound Jesus, and car

ried him away, and delivered him to Pilate, Mark xv. 1. Then led they Jesus from Caiaphas unto the hall of judgment, John xviii. 28.]

VER. 2.

Ηρξαντο δὲ κατηγορεῖν αὐτοῦ, λέγοντες· Τοῦτον εὕρομεν διαστρέφοντα τὸ ἔθνος, καὶ κωλύοντα Καίσαρι φόρους διδόναι, λέγοντα ἑαυτὸν Χριστὸν βασιλέα εἶναι.

And they began to accuse him, saying, We found this fellow perverting the nation, and forbidding to give tribute to Casar, saying that he himself is Christ ba King.

[And the Chief Priests accused him of many things, Mark xv. 3. They answered and said unto him, If he were not a malefactor, we would not have delivered him up unto thee, John xviii. 30.]

VER. 3.

Ο δὲ Πιλάτος ἐπηρώτησεν αὐτὸν, λέγων· Σὺ εἶ ὁ βασιλεὺς τῶν Ἰουδαίων; ο δὲ ἀποκριθεὶς αὐτῷ ἔφη· Σὺ λέγεις.

And Pilate asked him, saying, Art thou the King of the Jews? And he answered him and said, Thou sayest it.

[And Jesus stood before the governor and the governor asked him, saying, Art thou the king of the Jews? And Jesus said unto him, Thou sayest, Matt. xxvii. 11. And Pilate asked him, Art thou the king of the Jews? And he answering said unto

him, Thou sayest it, Mark xv. 2. Then Pilate entered into the judgment-hall again, and called Jesus, and said unto him, Art thou the king of the Jews? Jesus answered him, Sayest thou this thing of thyself, or did others tell it thee of me? Pilate answered, Am I a Jew? Thine own nation and the Chief Priests have delivered thee unto me: What hast thou done? Jesus answered, My kingdom is not of this world: If my kingdom were of this world, then would my servants fight, that I should not be delivered to the Jews: but now is my kingdom not from hence. Pilate therefore said unto him, Art thou a king then? Jesus answered, Thou sayest that I am a king. To this end was 1 born, and for this cause came I

into the world, that I should bear

witness unto the truth. Every one that is of the truth heareth my voice. Pilate saith unto him, What is truth?

Ὁ δὲ Ἡρώδης, ἰδὼν τὸν Ἰησοῦν, ἐχάρη λίαν· ἦν γὰρ θέλων ἐξ ἱκανοῦ ἰδεῖν αὐτὸν, διὰ τὸ ἀκούειν πολλὰ περὶ αὐτοῦ· καὶ ἤλπιζέ τι σημεῖον ἰδεῖν ὑπ ̓ αὐτοῦ γίνομενον.

And when Herod saw Jesus, he was exceeding glad : for he was desirous to see him of a long season, because he had heard many things of him ; and he hoped to have seen some miracle done by him.

all that was done by him: and he was perplexed, because that it was said of some that John was risen from the dead; And of some, That Elias had appeared; and of others, That one of the old prophets was risen again. And the same day Pilate and Herod were made friends together: for before they were at enmity between themselves.

VER. 13.

Πιλάτος δὲ, συγκαλεσάμενος τοὺς ̓Αρ χιερεῖς, καὶ τοὺς ἄρχοντας, καὶ τὸν λαὸν, And Pilate, when he had called together the Chief Priests and the rulers and the people,

VER. 14.

Εἶπε πρὸς αὐτοὺς· Προσηνέγκατέ μοι τὸν ἄνθρωπον τοῦτον, ὡς ἀποστρέφοντα τὸν λαόν· καὶ ἰδοὺ, ἐγὼ ἐνώπιον ὑμῶν ἀνακρίνας, οὐδὲν εὗρον ἐν τῷ ἀνθρώπῳ τούτῳ αἴτιον, ὧν κατηγορεῖτε κατ' αὐτοῦ.

Said unto them, Ye have brought this the people: and, behold, I, having eraman unto me, as one that perverteth mined him before you, have found no fault in this man touching those things whereof ye accuse him :

a And they began to accuse him, saying, We found this fellow perverting the nation, and forbidding to give tribute to Cæsar, saying that he himself is Christ a King, ver. 2.

VER. 15.

̓Αλλ ̓ οὐδὲ Ηρώδης· ἀνέπεμψα γὰρ ὑμᾶς πρὸς αὐτὸν, καὶ ἰδοὺ, οὐδὲν ἄξιον θανάτου ἐστὶ πεπραγμένον αὐτῷ.

No, nor yet Herod : for I sent you to him; and, lo, nothing worthy of death is done unto him.

VER. 16. Παιδεύσας οὖν αὐτὸν ἀπολύσω. I will therefore chastise him and release him.

VER. 17.

̓Ανάγκην δὲ εἶχεν ἀπολύειν αὐτοῖς κατὰ ἑορτην ἕνα.

̓Ανέκραξαν δὲ παμπληθεί, λέγοντες" Αἶρε τοῦτον, ἀπόλυσον δὲ ἡμῖν τὸν Βαραβ Cav

And they cried out all at once, saying, Away with this man, and release unto us Barabbas :

[Then cried they all again, saying, Not this man, but Barabbas. Now Barabbas was a robber, John xviii. 40.]

̓Απέλυσε δὲ αὐτοῖς τὸν διὰ στάσιν καὶ φόνον βεβλημένον εἰς τὴν φυλακὴν, ὃν ᾐτοῦν

Οἱ δὲ ἐπεφώνουν, λέγοντες· Σταύρωσον, τοῦ τὸν δὲ Ἰησοῦν παρέδωκε τῷ θελήματι σταύρωσον αὐτόν.

But they cried, saying, Crucify him, crucify him.

[They all say unto him, Let him be crucified, Matt. xxvii. 22. And they cried out again, Crucify him, Mark xv. 13.]

VER. 22.

'ọ dè rgírov siwe wçòc auroúc”, Tí yàp κακὸν ἐποίησεν οὗτος; οὐδὲν αἴτιον ανάτου εὗρον ἐν αὐτῷ· παιδεύσας οὖν αὐτὸν ἀπολύσω.

And he said unto them the third time, Why? what evil hath he done? I have found no cause of death in him: I will therefore chastise him, and let him go.

[And the governor said, Why? what evil hath he done? Matt. xxvii, 23. Then Pilate said unto them, Why? what evil hath he done? Mark xv. 14.]

But with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot, 1 Pet. i. 19. Who did no sin, neither was guile found in his mouth: Who, when he was reviled, reviled not again; when he suffered, he threatened not; but committed himself to him that judgeth righteously, ii. 22, 23.

VER. 23.

Οἱ δὲ ἐπέκειντο φωναῖς μεγάλαις, απ τούμενοι αὐτὸν σταυρωθῆναι· καὶ κατίσε χιον αἱ φωναὶ αὐτῶν, καὶ τῶν ̓Αρχιερέων,

And they were instant with loud voices, requiring that he might be crucified. And the voices of them and of the Chief Priests prevailed. VOL. II.

And as they led him away, they luid hold upon one Simon a Cyrenian, coming out of the country, and on him they laid the cross, that he might hear it after Jesus.

VER. 33.

Καὶ ὅτε ἀπῆλθον ἐπὶ τὸν τόπον τὸν και

And when they were come to the place, which is called Calvary, there they' a crucified him, and the malefactors, one on the right hand, and the other on the left.

There were also women looking on afar off; among whom was Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James the less, and of Joses, and Salome; (Who also, when he was in Galilee, followed him and ministered unto him ;) and many other women, which came up with him unto Jerusalem, Mark xv. 40, 41.

VER. 34.

Ὁ δὲ Ἰησοῦς ἔλεγε· Πάτες, άφες αὐτοῖς· οὐ γὰρ οἴδασι τι ποιοῦσι. Διαμεριζόμενοι δὲ τὰ ἱμάτια αὐτοῦ, ἔβαλον κλῆρον.

Then said Jesus, a Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do. And they parted his raiment, and cast lots.

a But I say unto you which hear, Love your enemies, do good to them which hate you, Bless them that curse you, and pray for them which despitefully use you.
