JANUARY 6, 1887.

The Fifty-Fifth Session of the General Assembly of the State of Indiana assembled in the new State House, in the city of Indianapolis, on Thursday, the sixth day of January, A. D. 1887, at 10 o'clock, being the day fixed by law for the meeting of the same.

The House of Representatives 'was called to order by Hon. W. R. Myers, Secretary of State, and prayer was offered by Rev. J. T. Tevis.

The roll of members-elect, as certified to the Secretary of State, was called, all responding to their names excepting Mr. Barnard of Porter (who was absent and paired on all questions with Mr. Bertram of Knox) and Mr. Mackey of Gibson, Knox and Vanderburgh.

The following is a list of members answering to their names and who were sworn in by Judge Mitchell, of the Supreme Court:

Mr. Mackey subsequently appeared and took the oath of office.

The Secretary of State then announced that the House would proceed to organize by the election of a Speaker and the other officers provided by law.

Hon. W. R. Gardiner nominated Warren G. Sayre, of Wabash County, for Speaker.

Mr. Charles P. Kellison nominated Hon. Charles P. Jewett, of Floyd County, for Speaker.

A ballot was then taken, with the following result:

Mr. Sayre was thereupon declared elected Speaker of the House.

The Speaker-elect was conducted to the chair by Messrs. Gardiner and Jewett, and made a brief address to the House, concluding by taking the oath of his office, in addition to his oath as a member.

For the office of Principal Clerk, William H. Smith and R. O. Johnson were nominated.

A ballot was taken, resulting as follows:

Mr. Smith was thereupon declared elected to the office of Principal Clerk, and was sworn in.

Mr. Rawls was declared elected to the office of assistant clerk and took the oath of his office.

The nomination of doorkeeper being next in order. C. C. Schreeder and Thomas Shea were nominated.
