Whereupon Mr. Burch was declared unanimously elected Chief Clerk of this House, during the present session of the General Assembly, took the oath required by law, and entered upon the duties of his office.

Whereupon Mr. Richard B. Jackson was declared duly elected Doorkeeper of this House during this present session of the General Assembly; who took the oath prescribed by law, and entered upon the duties of his office.

Mr. Bowlin submitted the following resolution:

Resolved, That the House now proceed to elect an Assistant Clerk, whose duty shall be to aid the Chief Clerk and transmit messages.

Mr. Thornton moved to amend the same, by striking out all after the word "resolved," and inserting the following: "That we now proceed to elect an Engrossing Clerk, whose duty it shall be to aid and assist the Chief Clerk, when not necessarily employed in the discharge of the duties of Engrossing Clerk."

Which amendment was rejected.

Mr. Thornton then moved to amend said resolution by striking out all after the word "resolved," and insert the following: "That we now proceed to elect an Assistant Clerk, whose duty it shall be to aid and assist in engrossing or enrolling, as the case may be, when not necessarily employed in assisting the Chief Clerk.
