The name of the Lord is a strong tower: the righteous runneth into it, and is safe. Prov. xviii. 10.

.There is no wisdom, nor understanding, nor counsel against the Lord. The horse is prepared against the day of battle; but safety (or victory) is of the Lord.-Prov.xxi.30,31. xix.21. Whoso putteth his trust in the Lord, shall be safe: many seek the ruler's favour; but every man's judgment cometh from the Lord.-Prov. xxix. 25, 26.

If ye will not believe, surely ye shall not be established.-Isa. vii. 9. Associate yourselves, &c. take counsel together, and it shall come to nought: speak the word and it shall not stand for God is with us.-Isa. viii. 9, 10. Jer. i. 18, 19. I will trust, and not be afraid; for the Lord Jehovah is my strength. Isa. xii. 2.

For the Lord of hosts hath purposed, and who shall disannul it? and his hand is stretched out, and who shall turn it back?-Isa. xiv. 27.

There shall be desolation, because thou hast forgotten the God of thy salvation; and hast not been mindful of the rock of thy strength.-Isa. xvii. 9, 10.

Thou hast been a strength to the poor, a strength to the needy in his distress a refuge from a storm, a shadow from the heat, when the blast of the terrible ones is as a storm against the wall.—Isa. xxv. 4.

Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on thee, because he trusteth in thee: trust ye in the Lord for ever, for in the Lord Jehovah is everlasting strength; for he bringeth down,&c.-Isa, xxvi.3-5. - Behold the Lord hath a mighty and a strong one.-Isa. xxviii. 2.6.

eried concerning this: their strength: is to sit still, &c. For thus saith the Lord God, the Holy One of Israel, In returning and rest shall ye be saved, in quietness and in confidence shall be your strength; and ye would not, &c.-Isa. xxx. 7. 15.

Behold the Lord God will come,&c. He shall feed his flock like a shepherd, &c. Who hath measured the waters in the hollow of his hand, and meted out heaven, &c.-Isa. xl. 10-12.

When thou passest through the waters, &c. they shall not overflow thee, &c. For I am the Lord thy God, the Holy One of Israel, thy Saviour, &c. And besides me there is no Saviour, &c. I will work, and who shall let it? &c.-Isa. xliii. 2, 3. 11–16. xlv. 21.

I am the Lord, and there is none else: I form the light, and create darkness, &c. Thou art a God, O God of Israel, the Saviour.—Isa. xlv. 6, 7. 15. 21.

My counsel shall stand, and I will. do all my pleasure. Isa. xlvi. 10.

Is my hand shortened at all, that it cannot redeem? or have I no power to deliver? Behold, at my rebuke, I dry up the sea, &c. Who is among you that feareth the Lord, &c. that walketh in darkness and hath no light? let him trust in the name of the Lord, and stay upon his God.-Isa. l. 2, 3. 10. viii. 17. lix. 1. Ps. cxv. 11.

Fear not, &c. for thy Maker is thine husband, the Lord of hosts is his name and thy Redeemer the Holy One of Israel, the God of the whole earth.-Isa. liv. 4, 5.

Blessed is the man that trusteth in the Lord, and whose hope the Lord is: for he shall be as a tree planted by the waters, &c. O Lord, the hope of Israel. Jer. xvii. 7, 8. 13.

Behold, I am the Lord, the God of all flesh is there any thing too hard for me?Jer. xxxii. 27.

I will surely deliver thee, &c. because thou hast put thy trust in me, saith the Lord.-Jer. xxxix. 18.

SECT. X. To look with Faith, and Hope, and Perseverance unto God in all cases: the Arguments for such behaviour:

ABRAM's servant looked if God had made his journey prosperous or not. Gen. xxiv. 21.

Fear ye not, stand still, and see the salvation of the Lord which he will shew, &c. and the Lord shall fight for you, &c.—Exod. xiv. 13, 14. Gen. xlix. 18.

The Lord, the Lord God, merciful and gracious, long-suffering, and abundant in goodness and truth.Exod. xxxiv. 6.

When the people complained (or were as it were complainers) it displeased the Lord, &c.-Numb. xi. 1.

God is not a man, that he should lie; neither the son of man, that he should repent: hath he said, and shall he not do it? or hath he spoken, and shall he not make it good?Numb. xxiii. 19. Heb. vi. 18. Titus i. 2. Rom. iii. 4. 1 Sam. XV. 29. The Lord thy God, he, is God: the faithful God, which keepeth covenant. Deut. vii. 9.

Not one thing hath failed of all the good things which the Lord your God spake, &c.-Josh. xxiii. 14. xxi. 45. 1 Kings viii. 56.

The king of Israel said, Behold this evil is of the Lord; what should I wait for the Lord any longer ?— 2 Kings vi. 33.

We have no might, &c. neither know we what to do; but our eyes are upon thee. Ye shall not need to fight in this battle; set yourselves, stand ye, and see the salvation of the Lord with you.-2 Chron. xx. 12.17.

I would seek unto God, and unto God would I commit my cause: which doth great things and unsearchable, marvellous things without number.-Job v. 8, 9.

In the morning will I direct my prayer unto thee, and will look up.Ps. v. 3.

Thou, Lord, hast not forsaken them that seek thee.-Ps. ix. 10.

They shall praise the Lord that seek him.-Ps. xxii. 26.

Thou the God of my salvation: on thee do I wait all the day, &c. mine eyes are ever towards the Lord: for he shall pluck my feet out of the net. -Ps. xxv. 5. 15. 21.

Wait on the Lord, and be of good courage, and he shall strengthen thine heart: wait, I say, on the Lord.Ps. xxvii. 14.

Behold, the eye of the Lord is upon them, &c. who hope in his mercy, to deliver their soul, &c. Our soul waiteth for the Lord, he is our help.Ps. xxxiii. 18-20.

Thy mercy, O Lord, is in the heavens thy faithfulness reacheth unto the clouds.-Ps. xxxvi. 5. lvii. 10. Commit thy way unto the Lord, &c. and he shall bring it to pass, &c. rest in the Lord, and wait patiently for him; fret not thyself, &c. because of the man who bringeth wicked devices to pass, &c. Fret not thyself in any wise to do evil, &c. Wait on the Lord, and keep his way, and he shall exalt thee.-Ps. xxxvii. 5. 7, 8.34.

And now, Lord, what wait I for? my hope is in thee.-Ps. xxxix. 7.

I waited patiently for the Lord, and he inclined unto me and heard my cry; he brought me up out of an horrible pit, out of the mire.-Ps. xl. 1, 2.

Why art thou cast down, O my soul? why art thou disquieted in me? hope thou in God, for I shall yet praise him.-Ps. xlii. 11. xliii. 5.

God is our refuge and strength; a very present help in time of trouble.Ps. xlvi. 1.

My soul, wait thou only upon God: for my expectation is only from him: he only is my rock, and, &c.-Ps. lxii. 5, 6.

I am weary of my crying, my throat is dried mine eyes fail while I wait for my God.-Ps. Ixix. 3. cxix. 123. Isa. xxxviii. 14.

But I will hope continually, and

will yet praise thee more and more. Ps. lxxi. 14. lii. 9.

Thou, O Lord, art a God full of compassion, and gracious longsuffering, and plenteous in mercy and truth.-Ps. lxxxvi. 15. cxi. 4. ·

Even from everlasting to everlasting thou art God: thou turnest man' to destruction, and sayest, Return ye children of men.-Ps. xc. 2, 3. "1

The Lord will not cast off his people, neither will he forsake his inheritance.-Ps. xciv. 14. Deut. xxxi. 6, 8.

The Lord is merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and plenteous in mercy : he will not always chide, neither will he keep anger for ever. Like as a father pitieth his children, so the Lord pitieth them that fear him, &c. The mercy of the Lord is from everlasting to everlasting.-Ps. ciii. 8, 9. 13. 17. lxxviii. 38, 39.

These all wait on thee, that thou mayest give them their meat in due season.-Ps. civ. 27.

They soon forgat his works; they waited not for his counsel.-Ps. cvi. 13.

The Lord is gracious and full of compassion: he hath given meat unto them that fear him, he will ever be mindful of his covenant.-Ps. cxi. 4, 5. cxvi. 5. cxii. 4.

My soul fainteth for thy salvation : I hope in thy word.-Ps. cxix. 81.

Behold, as the eyes of servants look unto the hand of their masters, &c. so our eyes wait upon the Lord our God, until he have mercy upon us.-Ps. cxxiii. 2.

I wait for the Lord; my soul doth wait, and in his word do I hope. My soul waiteth for the Lord, more than they that watch for the morning: let Israel hope in the Lord, for with the Lord is mercy and plenteous redemp tion.-Ps. cxxx. 5-7.

Our bones are scattered, &c. but mine eyes are unto thee, O God the Lord.-Ps. cxli. 7, 8.

The Lord is gracious and full of compassion, slow to anger, and of great mercy: the Lord is good to all,

and his tender mercies are over all his works. The Lord upholdeth all that fall, &c. the eyes of all wait upon (or look unto) thee, and thou givest them their meat in due season. Thou openest thine hand, and satisfiest the desire of every living thing. Ps. cxlv. 8, 9. 14-16.

Happy is he, &c. whose hope is in the Lord his God.-Ps. cxlvi. 5.

The Lord taketh pleasure in them, &c. in those that hope in his mercy. Ps. cxlvii. 11.

Hope deferred maketh the heart sick: but when the desire cometh, it is, &c.-Prov. xiii. 12.

Say not thou, I will recompense evil: wait on the Lord, and he shall save thee.Prov. xx. 22.

If thou faint in the day of adversity, thy strength is small.-Prov. xxiv. 10. I will wait upon the Lord, that hideth his face from the house of Jacob, and I will look for him, &c. Should not a people seek unto their God?-Isa. viii. 17. 19.

At that day shall a man look to his Maker, and his eyes shall have respect to the Holy One of Israel, and he shall not look to the altars. Isa. xvii. 7, 8.

And it shall be said in that day, Lo, this is our God; we have waited for him, and he will save us.Isa. xxv. 9.

In the way of thy judgments, O Lord, have we waited for thee: the desire of our soul is to the remembrance of thy name. With my soul have I desired thee in the night, &c. Isa. xxvi. 8, 9.

He that believeth shall not make haste.-Isa. xxviii. 16.

Woe to the rebellious children that take counsel, but not of me; and that cover with a covering, but not of my spirit, &c. Their strength is to sit still, &e. For thus saith the Lord, the Holy One of Israel, In returning and rest shall ye be saved: in quietness and confidence shall be your strength, and ye would not, &c. therefore will the Lord wait that he may

be gracious unto you, &c. for the Lord is a God of judgment; blessed are all they that wait for him.Isa. xxx. 1. 7. 15. 18.

Woe to them that go down to Egypt for help, &c. but they look not unto the Holy One of Israel, neither seek the Lord.-Isa. xxxi. 1.

O Lord, be gracious unto us, we have waited for thee.-Isa. xxxiii. 2.

Hast thou not known, &c. that the everlasting God, the Lord, the Creator of the ends of the earth fainteth not, neither is weary? There is no searching of his understanding; he giveth power, &c. But they that wait upon the Lord shall renew strength: they shall mount up with wings as eagles: they shall run and not be weary; they shall walk, and not faint.—Isa. xỈ, 28-31.

Look unto me, and be ye saved, all the ends of the earth: for I am God, and there is none else.-Isa. xlv. 22.

Thou shalt know that I am the Lord; for they shall not be ashamed that wait for me.-Isa. xlix. 23.

Who is among you that feareth the Lord, &c. and walketh in darkness, and hath no light? let him trust in the name of the Lord, and stay upon his God.-Isa. 1. 10.

For since the beginning of the world men have not heard, nor perceived by the ear, neither hath the eye seen, O God, besides thee, what he hath prepared for him that waiteth for him.Isa. lxiv. 4.

I am the Lord, which exercise loving-kindness, judgment, and righteousness in the earth; for in these things I delight, saith the Lord.-Jer. ix. 24.

O the hope of Israel, the Saviour thereof, in time of trouble, &c. Are there any among the vanities of the Gentiles that can cause rain? Art not thou he, O Lord our God; therefore we will wait upon thee, for thou hast made all these things.-Jer. xiv. 8. 22. xvii. 13.

Blessed is the man, &c. whose hope the Lord is.-Jer. xvii. 7.
