PREFACE.

IN

N the summer of 1886, I was requested by Sir Henry Wilmot, Bart., as Chairman of Quarter Sessions, to edit the most valuable parts of the records of the

county of Derby. To this leisure of four years was

labour of love the host part of the gladly given, with t result that in the summer of 1890 Messrs. Bemrose and S Limited, published two volumes entitled "Three Centuries of Derbyshire Annals as illustrated by the records of the Quarter Sessions."

In 1898 the Standing Joint Committee did me the honour of proposing that I should superintend the arrange it and cataloguing of the whole of the records down to the p sent time, and should also issue a supplemental volume containing a complete calendar and index. following pages are the

result of this commission.

Though mainly intended as a work of practical reference, and as an aid to insure the safety of the documents, this volume ought to prove of some interest to the occasional historical student, and of true value to the local inquirer into county

economics.

Certain points not fully elucidated in the Annals receive further treatment in these pages, and a few new subjects that were then overlooked are duly recorded and briefly explained.
