then indulged the hope, sanctioned, I trust, by present appearances, that we might at length witness, if we could not accelerate, that moral and intellectual progress of society, under whose beneficial influence the universal recognition of right shall, one day, supersede the penurious, or even the liberal concession of privilege, while "knowledge shall be increased," and, as the happy result, a consummation devoutly to be anticipated, "nation shall not lift up sword against nation, neither shall they learn war any more."

Sustained by an indulgent Providence through a various day of life, now protracted beyond the estimated age of man, I cannot but desire for my friends what I would humbly solicit for myself, an evening hour, cheered by some agreeable recollections, and especially enlivened, as "the world recedes and disappears,” by those prospects of futurity which the world cannot give, and is powerless to take

away.
