NEWMARKET HOUGHTON MEETING.

[During the first three days of this Meeting there was a dense fog on the Heath. On Monday men were stationed at intervals on the Course to guide the jockies, and afterwards the line of the Course was tracked with tan and sawdust. Thursday and Friday were fine, but the fog returned on Saturday, though in a less degree.]

MONDAY, October the 26th.

MR Lambden's b. m. Chance, by Confederate, aged (Flatman) beat Mr Onslow's Ruff, 4 yrs (Robinson) 8st. 71b. each, A.F. 200, h. ft.

After cantering half way, Chance took a strong lead, was not afterwards headed, and won easily by a length.

Handicap Sweepstakes of 25 sov. each, and only 10 ft. if declared, &c. to be divided between the first and second horses, for three yrs old and upwards; D.M. (9 subs. 3 of whom paid 10 sov. ft.) Mr John Day's br. f. Miss Slick, by Muley Moloch, 3 yrs, 6st. 10.

The Cambridgeshire Stakes of 25 sov. each, 10 ft. and only 5 if declared, &c. with 100 added by the Inhabitants of Newmarket and the Neighbourhood; Cambridgeshire Course, last mile and a distance straight; the winner of any handicap race value 200 sov. including the winner's own stake, between the day of publishing the weights and the time of running, both inclusive, to carry 5lb. of two such races or of the Cesarewitch stakes, 8lb. extra; no horse to

Sotades and Duc an Durras went off in front, followed by Prior of St Margaret's, Lady Wildair, and Terrier at the head of the ruck; at the Red Stand Prior of St Margaret's took a lead of about three lengths, and Terrier the second place, with Sotades, Best Bower, Duc an Durras, and Lady Wildair following next; they ran in this order to the Duke's Stand, where Terrier, Sotades, Best Bower, and Duc an Durras were beaten, and Sting, who had been gradually getting up, took the second place; Prior of St Margaret's still went on with the lead, and Sting made an attempt to reach him about fifty yards from home, but did not succeed, Prior of St Margaret's winning rather cleverly by half a length; Lady Wildair was a moderate third, Colleen Bawn, Garry Owen, and Terrier were next. The pace very good.
