ROMAN CATHOLICS.

This denomination now have fifteen churches and sixteen priests in the State, governed by the Rt. Rev. Bernard O'Rielly, bishop of the diocese; of this number four churches and eight priests are in the city of Providence. There is also a Convent; an Orphan Asylum; a Female Asylum (affording the comfort of a home to at least 50 destitute children); a parochial school attached to each church, under the superintendence of the Sisters of Mercy of the Convent. The Catholic population of Providence is estimated at 15,000. The number of pupils attending school in Providence is about 1200. The Bishop resides in Pond street, corner of Fenner street, Providence,

UNITARIANS.

The "First Congregational Church," in Providence, founded in 1720, has been Unitarian for more than half a century, and is now one of the largest in the city. The present pastor is the Rev. E. B. Hall, D. D., installed in 1882. A second society was formed from this in 1828, called the "Westminster Congregational Church," also a large and strong society, whose pastor is now the Rev. F. H. Hedge, D. D. Individual members of these two societies, in 1842,

established a "ministry at large," and erected for it a Free Chapel, on Benefit street, where a church was organized, and regular Sabbath services have been held there from that time without interruption. The minister, Rev. E. M. Stone, devotes himself entirely to the temporal relief and spiritual instruction of the poorer classes, while others in better circumstances make a part of his congregation. He has a band of teachers and helpers, who sustain a Sunday school, sewing school, and various forms of charity, without regard to sect.

Beside these three societies, there are two others, a Mariners and a Christian, who do not bear the name of Unitarian, but hold a similar faith with the same form. Believers of the same stamp are found in nearly every part of the State; and in Newport, there is a regular church, under the Rev. C. T. Brooks, worshipping in the very house formerly occupied by Dr. Hopkins, the father of the Hopkintonian theology; and in communion with this, there is a society on the Island of the Christian name.

UNIVERSALISTS.

This denomination has, in the State, 10 societies, 5 meeting-houses, and 4 preachers. The Universalist State Convention meets annually, on the 3d Wednesday and Thursday in May. Rev. J. Boyden, Jr., of Woonsocket, Clerk. They have also a Rhode Island Tract Society, which meets with the Convention.

VIEW OF THE STATE HOUSE AT NEWPORT.

The State House at Newport is a fine brick building, located at the head of Washington square, two stories high above a basement story of stone. It was erected in 1741, and much of its interest is to be attributed to its antiquity. Its rooms are appropriated to the use of the Legislature, the different Courts of the County, State, and United States. The hall for the Representatives is used as a Court room, and the Senate Chamber is adorned by a fine full-length portrait of Washington, painted by Stuart for the town.
