LADY'S

BAVARIAN WINTER JACKET.

DESIGNED BY MRS. WARREN.

10 oz. of Claret Lama Wool, or Fleecy 4-Thread; 5 oz. of White. Pins, No. 9.

Stitch Brioche; Wool forward, slip 1, knit 2 together, the same forwards and back.

Commence with White for the Border.

Cast on 288 stitches, knit 38 rows White, pass off 7 ribs on each side on to a string, on the remaining stitches knit 24 rows with colored.

On the 25th colored row knit 16 ribs, then decrease 1 rib by knitting 3 stitches in 1, knit 48 ribs, decrease 1 rib as before, knit the remaining 16 ribs.

Knit 84 ribs, decreasing on every 25th row in the same manner and place.

In the next row, knit 5 ribs, decrease 1 rib, then knit 4 ribs, decrease, 4 ribs and decrease, then decrease at every alternate rib 21 times, decrease after every 4th rib twice, but in beginning and ending not reckon the 1st or last rib.

Knit 18 rows without decreasing.

Knit 13 ribs decrease.

Knit 4 ribs, increase after every rib by taking up the 2 half stitches at the back, bring Wool forward, slip 1, knit 1, do this 12 times, once after every rib, knit 4 ribs decrease, knit 13 ribs.

Knit 63 rows, decreasing at the 30th and 50th row, after and before the 13 ribs at the sides, which will be on the 14th rib each side.

Pass off the outer 13 ribs on each side to a string, then cast off the next 2 ribs to each side of the back, to form the Armhole.

Knit 50 rows on the remaining stitches of the back. This brings the knitting to the Shoulder.

In the next 8 rows leave 2 ribs unknit at the beginning of the 1st and 2nd rows, 2 more at the 2nd two rows, 2 more at the 3rd two rows, and 4 more at the 4th 2 rows, knit the remainder of the row, then a row back the whole length.

Knit 2 rows.

Knit the same number of rows with colored on the 13 rib of each side of the front, that were passed on to the string increas

ing 6 stitches on 2 ribs, by picking up the back stitches as directed for the back pieces, decreasing on the sides next the shoulders as directed for the back.

The slanting edges of the back and front are to be sewed together to form the shoulders aud arm-holes.

Take up the White ribs that were passed off on each side, and with White knit a sufficient number of rows to form the Borders for the front. To slope the ends of the Borders to a point, knit till within 3 stitches, then turn back, do this for 6 rows, then knit 1 plain row throughout. Cast off.

For the Collar.

Cast on with White 111 stitches, knit 15 rows, then knit 21 rows colored, leaving 1 rib unknit at the beginning of each row. Knit 1 plain row. Cast off.

Sleeves.

Cast on 78 stitches colored, knit 4 rows, on the 5th row leave 2 ribs unknit at the end, and on every succeeding 2nd row leave 2 other ribs unknit, so that on the 27th row there will be 24 ribs, unknit at the end.

Knit 80 rows. Cast off.

Cuffs.

Cast on with White 24 stitches, knit 94 rows. Cast off.

[blocks in formation]

3rd Row. The same, only knitting 2 instead of 3 at beginning of row.

6th Row.-Pearl.

This forms one stripe of Green, continue knitting till there are 6 stripes of Green and 6 stripes of Scarlet in alternate stripes, exclusive of the 4 plain rows at the commencement. Then take off 40 stitches on a thread on each side, then on the centre stitches, knit 2 Green and 2 Scarlet stripes. In pearling the last row back, take up on the loose pin 9 stitches at the side of the centre piece, and the 40 stitches that were passed off on one side and pearl. With Green, knit back the same as at the 1st Green row, then take up on the loose Pin the 40 stitches that were passed off, and the 9 at the side of the centre piece, and knit the same. At the beginning and end of every succeeding row take 1 loop of the sides, but not at the pearl row.

Knit 2 Green stripes, and 1 Scarlet. After the last Green stripe knit with Scarlet 2 plain rows, then with Wool twice over the Pin knit 2 together, knit 2 rows back, in the 1st take off the 2 stitches as 1 loop, this will make a long stitch.
