WOMAN AND HER POETS.

Continued from page 116.

THERE are other Poets than those who have sung of Woman --the Knight Errants of Poetry-the Poets of Action. And there is one man, who connects the Bard with the Champion, that fertile, fine-hearted fellow, Thomas Hood. His Two Poems are sermons in rhyme. We speak of the "Bridge of Sighs" and "the Song of a Shirt." The first, for the high attributes of art, and the depth of its feeling has only been equalled by Cruikshank's Bridge-Suicide, the closing, and by far the most powerful sketch in his first Series. "The Song of a Shirt," picturesque, dramatic as it is, has, as yet, foiled all the artists who have attempted its illustration. Perhaps no single poem has ever effected so much social good. The earnestness in which he has taken up Woman's cause-of women who could scarcely hear their Champion, much less reward him, ought to endear his memory to them. He shrank not from scenes that had revolted all his brother minstrels before, but made court and alley, hovel and garret, yield materials for Song. Hood wisely knew that Truth can always be made poetic, and that mere prettinesses of expression would as soon weary the ear, as the blossoms staled on the jaded Flower-girl who began at last to "hate the smell of roses."

It is a fine thing to see this higher, simpler Poetry growing more popular, more potent every day. The word-service of Woman's champions is over. We do not now nail her glove to our crest, but we carry her sufferings in our heart, we do not cast down our gauntlet in her defence, but we hold out the hand of an equal to her. The gallantry used to the “ladye of our love" has deepened into making a companion of the wife of our

affections.

We may be a little anticipating, but all this is being done. The true men are girding on their armour. Tennyson's" Princess" that delicate vase of select flowers-so full of elegant thought through which the gold thread of truth runs so quietly, yet brightly-has attacked the false position on which some speculative madmen have been hoisting the sex. His
