NECK TIE IN GRECIAN NETTING.

DESIGNED BY MRS. WARREN.

2 Meshes, one inch and one inch wide. 4 shades of Green and one shade of Lemon or Straw color 4-Thread Berlin Wool, 3 skeins of each, and 1 skein of Dark Green Dacca Silk.

Explanation of Stitch.

1st Stitch. Net a plain row with the large Mesh.

2nd Stitch.-Small Mesh. Put the Wool round the fingers as in plain netting, pass the needle through the finger loop into the 1st stitch, then pass it into the 2nd stitch, draw the 2nd through the 1st, and again draw the 1st through the 2nd, finish the stitch by pulling the Wool tight and with drawing the fingers from the loops, next net the small loop that goes across the twisted stitches, repeat this to the end of the row. The next row is plain netting, large Mesh. To those who do not understand the stitch it will be well to practise on a small piece first. 1st Row. Commence a plain row with large Mesh on a foundation of 136 stitches with the Straw color.

2nd Row.-Fancy row, Small Mesh. Withdraw the Mesh, and run a string through the loops. Cut off from the foundation and pick out the cut stitches, on this side net a row with small Mesh same color, this forms the centre of the Tie, take the string and run it through the centre.

3rd Row.-Join on the darkest Green and commence about the centre of the side with the large Mesh, net a row all round, including the ends where net 2 stitches into 1.

Each row must be commenced in a different place. It will be necessary to observe that each twist comes in the space of the preceding row and must be commenced accordingly.

4th Row.-Fancy row same shade, if an odd stitch is left at the end of the row net it plain.

5th Row. Next shade of Green, large Mesh, netting 2 stitches into 1 round the ends, and this observe to do in every large Mesh row, if required.

6th Row.-Fancy row, same color.

7th Row. Next shade Green, large Mesh.

8th Row-Fancy row, same shade.

9th Row.-Next shade Green, large Mesh.

10th Row.-Fancy row, same shade.

11th Row. Plain row, Straw color, and small Mesh.

12th Row.-Plain row, same color, large Mesh.

13th Row.-Large Mesh, same color. Net the 2nd stitch 1st and 1st 2nd and continue.

14th Row.-Small Mesh. Plain.

15th and 16th Rows.-Large Mesh. 2 rows of Dacca Silk, plain netting.

Draw a narrow dark Green Satin Ribbon through the Straw color in the centre, also round the tie in the lightest shade of Green, this will prevent it stretching and also add much to its appearance, fasten with a Shaded Green Silk Ring.

CROCHET COUCH OR CHAIR CUSHION.

DESIGNED BY MRS. WARREN.

9 shades of Amber 4-Thread Berlin Wool, three-quarters of an oz. of each shade. Steel Crochet Hook Guaging. No. 16, of the Knitting Guage.

-

1st Row. Make a tight chain of 11 stitches with the lightest shade, join the 2 ends together and work a round of D° not so tight, taking care there are only 11 stitches, cut off and draw the Wool through to the back, tie it securely and neatly, and this must be done at every row.

2nd Row.-Same shade, 1 long into every chain, making 2 chain at top between each.

3rd Row. Same shade, D° under the 2 chain, 7 chain, repeat, making 11 chains of 7.

4th Row. Take the next shade, De under the centre of the

7 chain, 7 chain, repeat.

5th Row.-Next shade, D° under centre of 7, 8 chain, repeat. 6th Row. Next shade, D° on the 1st loop from D° stitch in last row, 3 more D stitches, increase by making 1 chain, 4 D° stitches, omitting to work on the De stitch in last row, repeat.

This forms the Centre Circle.

Take the 2nd lightest shade and the 3 next shades, work 6 circles with these shades precisely the same as the 1st circle.

Then lay the wrong side of the 1st circle upon a table, and place the 6 circles round it all on the wrong side, and sew them with Wool the same color as the outside row of the 6 circles.

Take the 3rd lightest shade and 3 next shades and work 12 circles, sew them as flat as possible round the 6 circles. Take the 4th lightest shade and the 3 next shades and work 18 circles, sew them as in previous row.

Take the 5th lightest shade and 3 next, work 24 circles.
Take the 6th lightest shade and 3 next, work 30 circles.

If the Cushion is liked larger 1 more shade of Wool must be added, and 36 circles must be made, but this size will be found large enough for ordinary purposes, when sewed together, damp and lay it between linen folded 3 times to absorb the damp, and press it by laying a flat surface over it and a weight. On the other side the Wools are reversed, beginning with the darkest shade in the centre. Line with Light Violet color Silk upon a dark Cotton lining. 3lbs. of Feathers will be sufficient for the Cushion. Trim it with Amber Silk Cord, and Amber Tassels at all the corners.
