WATCH HOOK.

DESIGNED BY MRS. WARREN.

9 shades of Scarlet Wool, 2 skeins of each of the lightest, and 1 of the rest. 1 reel of Drab Boars' Head Cotton, No. 6. De means Double Crochet.

Begin with the darkest shade.

1st Row. Make a chain of 12 stitches, unite the ends, and work 2 De into every loop, then make 1 long with 1 chain between each into every loop. Cut off the Wool, tie it at the back, do this in every row when a different shade is used.

2nd Row. Use the colors in every row in gradation, De on long, 3 chain, 1 long on long, 3 chain, repeat.

3rd Row.-De on Dc, 4 chain, 3 long, the 1st into 3rd loop, 4 chain, repeat.

Continue until the 8th row, increasing 2 long into every row, that is, 5, 7, 9, 11 and 13 long, arranged so that 1 long shall come before, and 1 after, every long in preceding row.

9th Row.-Lightest shade, De on 1st long, 5 chain, De into 3rd loop, 5 chain, De into 3rd loop, 15 chain, De into same loop, 5 chain, De into 3rd loop, 5 chain, De on last long, repeat.

10th Row.-Cotton, De into 1st chain of 5, 5 chain, De into centre loop of next 5, 1 chain, miss 1 loop of the 15 chain, 5 long successively,* 2 long into next loop, repeat from,* twice more, then 5 long successively, 1 chain, De into centre loop of 5, 5 chain, De into centre loop of next 5, 1 long between the 2 chains of 5, and into the 2 De stitches, repeat.

11th Row.-Cotton, De into centre loop of 1st 5 chain, 5 chain, De on 2nd long, 5 chain, De into 3rd loop, 5 chain, 1 long into 3rd loop, 3 chain, 1 long into next loop, 5 chain, De into 3rd loop, 5 chain, De into 3rd loop, 5 chain, De into centre loop of 5, repeat.

12th Row. Last row, Cotton, De into centre loop of 5, 5 chain, repeat this, on the top of the shell it will be De into centre of 3, over the shell, unite the 2 shells together by De into the centre loop of the last 5 chain, then repeat without making any chain between the 2nd De stitches.

To make it up.

Take a piece of circular Cardboard, 5 inches in diameter, and a piece of colored paper a very little larger, sew the centres of the work and Cardboard together, then sew the divisions of the work at equal distances round the Cardboard, leaving the border free, take a yard of rather narrow Satin Ribbon, cut off 12 inches, sew the ends to the top of the Cardboard of an inch asunder, make the remainder into a bow and sew it to the top of the Ribbon, sew a pearl Watch Hook into the centre, then gum the Colored paper on to the Cardboard.

HONITON LACE COLLAR.

No. 28 and 50 Boars' Head Cotton. No. 20 very fine Steel Crochet Hook.

1st Row. Make a chain of 168 stitches, turn back, work 2 long into 1 loop, 1 chain, miss 1 loop, repeat, there should be 84 double stitches.

2nd Row.-Turn back, 2 long under the 1 chain, 1 chain, repeat, 84 double stitches.

3rd Row. Cut off the thread and commence at the foundation chain with 50 Cotton, to work round the band, but not along the foundation chain, 1 long, 3 chain, 1 long into the loop of the 1st row, 3 chain, 1 long, into the corner loop, 5 chain, 1 long into same loop,* 3 chain, 1 long under the 1 chain, repeat from* till the other corner where work the same.

4th Row. In commencing this row the 1st long must come

on the 1st long of last row, and in ending the row, the last long must come on the last long, consequently the beginning and end of every row is increased by 1 chain of 3 and 1 long. Turn back, 1 long, 3 chain, 1 long under the 3 chain, 3 chain, 1 long under the 3 chain, 3 chain, 1 long under the 5 chain, 5 chain, 1 long under same,* 3 chain, 1 long under the 3 chain, repeat from* till the corner and work both corners alike.

5th Row.-Turn back, this row must not be increased either at the beginning or end, 1 long under the 1st 3 chain, and not on the 1st long, 3 chain, repeat as in last row. This row ends with 1 long under the last 3 chain.

6th Row.-Turn back, this is commenced with 1 long on last long, and is exactly like the 4th row, ending with 1 long on last long, cut off the thread sufficiently long to fasten, there should be 88 chains of 3, exclusive of the 5 chain at the corners, and 5 chains of 3 at each end.

Begin at the other end, De on the 4th long stitch from the neck, 3 chain, 1 long under the 3 chain, 3 chain, 1 long under the 3 chain, 3 chain, 1 long under the 5 chain, 5 chain, De into centre loop of 5, 5 chain, 1 long under same, 3 chain, 1 long under every 3 chain till the 3 chain after the 3rd long from the corner, then 3 chain, De on 5th long from the corner,* 3 chain, miss 1 chain of 3, 1 long under every 3 chain, with 3 chain between each, 8 times, then 3 chain, De on 10th long stitch from the De stitch, repeat from* till the corner, where work both corners alike, terminating with De stitch on the 4th long from the neck.

Then 5 chain on the 1st Do, 1 long with 3 chain between each under every 3 chain, turn the work, keep turning and working it backwards and forwards till it comes to a point, make 11 other points round the collar, the same commencing on every De stitch with 5 chain, and decreasing at beginning and end of every row, fasten in the ends.
