into 4th loop, repeat from,* then commence on the 1st long stitch, work 6 chain, De into every 4th loop round the Band, sew it on at the back of the Head, run a narrow Satin Ribbon through, also a Ribbon through the 2nd row, pull the Cap in shape, damp and press it before trimming.

GENTLEMEN'S COMFORTER IN CROCHET.

Steel Crochet Hook, No. 16, or fine Ivory Hook. 3 shades of Scarlet 4-Thread Berlin Wool, the lightest to be intense Scarlet, each of the 2 others distinct shades; 32 skeins of the lightest shade, 8 of the 2nd, and 9 of the darkest, and 32 skeins of White.

1st Row.-Darkest shade, commence on a foundation of 89 stitches, turn back and work a row of De, it is necessary to observe that the work may be turned every row.

2nd Row.-Turn back, make 1 long, or 3 chain which is equivalent to 1 long, 2 long into next loop,* 1 chain, 3 long into every 4th loop, repeat from* till the end when make 1 chain, 1 long on the last D° stitch.

3rd Row. Same shade, 1 long or 3 chain as before, 2 long into next loop,* 1 chain, 3 long, 4th loop, repeat till the end when make 1 chain, 1 long on last long, observe to make every 3 long come into the 1 chain between the long stitches in the preceding row. Every row is the same.

4th Row.Tie a very neat knot in the Wool in joining, work 2 rows with the middle shade.

Work 2 rows of Scarlet.

Work 1 row of White.

Work 1 row of darkest shade.

Work 1 row middle shade.

Work 1 row Scarlet.

Work 1 row White.

Work 1 row dark.

Work 1 row middle.

Work 1 row Scarlet.

Work 1 row White.

Work 1 row Scarlet.

Work 1 row White.

Work 1 row Scarlet.

Work 1 row White.

Work 1 row Scarlet.

This forms the Border.

Then work 7 rows White and 7 rows Scarlet alternately till there are 6 stripes of White and 5 of Scarlet, then commence the Border making both ends alike.

For the Fringe.

Cut 5 skeins of Scarlet and 5 of White once, then divide the length into 3, cut it and with a large Rug Needle draw in two threads of Scarlet into the 1st loop, double the ends even, and tie them into a close knot, do this into every alternate loop making a spaced Fringe of 4 Scarlet and 4 White, after which tie each space of Fringe into a knot about an inch from the former tie, then comb it and cut it evenly. Previous to working in the Fringe damp the Comforter slightly but equally, and lay it between a Linen Cloth with a weight upon it, it may be folded double for this purpose.

PATTERN FOR DARNING A NETTED BREAD CLOTH, NETTED SQUARE.

Square netting is done by commencing on 1 stitch and increasing 1 at the commencement of every row till it becomes

the size required. No. 12, Evans's Boar's Head Cotton, and a Mesh the size of a No. 10 Knitting Pin, it should be darned in No. 20, 3-Threads Knitting Cotton.

MUSIC STOOL COVERING IN CROCHET.

4-Thread Berlin Wool, 7 shades of Scarlet, 3 shades of light Amber, 2 shades of Blue Green, 2 shades of Violet, 1 White. Steel Crochet Hook Guaging, No. 16. 1 skein of lightest Scarlet, 6 of 2nd shade, 6 of 3rd, 6 of 4th, 8 of 5th, 12 of 6th, 3 of the 7th; 4 skeins of White, 4 skeins of dark Green, 9 of light, 1 skein each shade Amber; 5 skeins of light Violet, 6 of the dark.

1st Row. Take the lightest shade of Scarlet make a tight chain of 11 stitches, join the ends together and work a row of De taking care not to work it tightly, cut off the Wool, draw the ends to the back and tie it neatly. This must be done at every

row.

2nd Row.-Work 1 long into every chain making 2 chain between each at the top. There should be 11 long stitches.

3rd Row.-Take the next lighest shade, D° under the centre of the 2 chain, 7 chain, repeat.

4th Row.-Next shade, D° under centre of 7, 7 chain, repeat. 5th Row.-Next shade, D° under centre of 7, 8 chain, repeat. 6th Row.-Next shade, begin on the 1st loop from De stitch in last row, 4 De stitches, 1 chain, 4 more De stitches, omit to work on the De stitch in last row, repeat.

7th Row.--Take the last shade but one, work exactly the same as the last row.

This forms one Circle.

Take the 2nd lightest shade of Scarlet, and with the remaining shades work exactly like the preceding rows, make 6 circles, turn all the circles on the wrong side, sew with Wool the same color the 6 circles round the 1 circle.

This forms the Centre.

1st Row.-Take the darkest shade of Green and make 6 small circles worked the same as the 1st and 2nd rows, join them neatly on the wrong side into the outside openings of the 6 large circles. The object of doing this is to form the round which otherwise would be angular.

Take the same color Green, D in the 3rd loop of the Scarlet from the small circle of Green, make 5 chain, De into every 3rd loop till within 3 stitches of the Green circles observing that there are only 12 of these chains of 5, should there be more loops than the requisite quantity D sometimes into a 4th loop instead of a 3rd, (this will sometimes happen and cannot be avoided,) then make 5 chain and D on the 2nd long stitch of the Green circle, 5 chain, D on next long stitch, 5 chain, D on next long stitch, 5 chain, D° on next long stitch, 5 chain, De into 3rd loop of Scarlet circle, repeat. Observe there are only 3 distinct chains of 5 on the Green circle exclusive of the 5 chain, which appears to join the Scarlet and Green circles together.

2nd Row.-Next shade of Green, De into centre of 5, 5 chain, repeat till the chain of 5 which unites the 2 circles, omit this chain, 5 chain, D on the 1st chain of 5 in the Green circle, 5 chain, D on centre of next chain, 5 chain, D° on centre of next chain, 5 chain, D in centre of 2nd chain of 5, and repeat.

3rd Row.-White, D in centre of 5, 5 chain, repeat till the 5 chain which unites the circles, omit this, make 7 chain, 1 long into the centre of the 5 on the top of the Green, 5 chain, 1 long into centre of next 5, 7 chain, D into centre of 2nd 5, repeat.

4th Row.-Lightest Amber, 5 long under the 5 chain, between the 2 long stitches, 5 chain, De into centre of 7,* 5 chain, De into centre of 5, repeat from,* 9 times more, 5 chain, D° into centre of 7, 5 chain, repeat from beginning.

5th Row.-2nd shade Amber, 7 long over the 5 long, letting the 1st long come beyond the 1st long stitch in last row,* 5 chain, D into centre of 5, repeat from,* 10 times more, 5 chain, repeat from beginning.

6th Row.-Darkest Amber, 9 long arranged as in last row, 7 chain, D into centre of 5,* 5 chain, De into centre of 5, repeat from,* 9 times more, 7 chain, repeat from beginning.

7th Row.-Dark Violet, 11 long arranged as in last row, 7 chain, D into centre of the 5 chain,* 7 chain, De into centre of 5, repeat from,* 8 times more, then 7 chain, repeat from beginning.

8th Row.-Light Violet, 13 long arranged as before, 8 chain, De into centre of 7,* 7 chain, D into centre of 7, repeat from,* 6 times more, 8 chain, repeat from beginning.

9th Row.-White, 15 long arranged as before, 7 chain, D into 4th loop,* 7 chain, De into centre of 7, repeat from,* 6 times more, then 7 chain, D into 4th loop from Dc stitch in last row, 7 chain, repeat from beginning.

10th Row.-2nd shade of Light Scarlet, 17 long arranged as before, 7 chain, De into 3rd loop,* 7 chain, De into centre of 7, repeat from,* 7 times more, 7 chain, D° into 3rd loop from D stitch in last row, 7 chain, repeat from beginning.
