Enstructions for Working the Patterns.

MELON PATTERN FLOWER MAT IN CROCHET.

Small Bone or Steel Crochet Hook. 6 Shades of Amber 4-Thread Berlin Wool, 2 Skeins of each; and 2 Shades of Violet, 1 Skein of each will be required. No. 1, Dark Amber; No. 2, next Shade; No. 3, next Shade; No. 4, next Shade; No. 5, next Shade; No. 6, Pale Lemon. The centre of this Mat must be worked rather tightly. De means Double Crochet.

1st Row.-Commence the centre with the lightest shade of Violet wool, make a chain of 5 stitches, join the 1st and last loops together.

2nd Row.-D 1 round, increasing after every stitch by making 1 chain.

3rd Row.-D a round without increasing.

4th Row. Join on the 3rd shade of Amber wool, work a round increasing 1 after every stitch.

5th Row. I round of the same color without increasing. 6th Row. A round of the same increasing 1 after every stitch. 7th Row. Join on the dark Violet, work 2 stitches Violet, and 2 stitches Amber, alternately for this round.

8th Row.-1 round of dark Violet increasing 1, after every 4th stitch.

9th Row. Another row of the Light Violet increasing 1, after every 8th stitch.

10th Row.-Take up the Amber, work 2 stitches, then with the Light Violet work 2 stitches alternately, in this round, without increasing.

11th Row. A round of the same Amber increasing 1, after every 5th stitch.

12th Row. Join on the 4th shade of Amber, work a round without increasing.

13th Row. Join on the Light Lemon color, work the round so that there shall be 90 stitches only.

11th Row. Join on the Light Violet, make 5 chain, and De into every alternate loop.

15th Row. Join on the darkest Amber, under the centre of the 5 chain, make 3 chain. Twist the wool twice over the hook for the long stitches in this and the remaining rows. *7 long stitches under the next chain of 5, making 1 chain between each long stitch at the top, 3 chain, D under the 2nd 5, 3 chain, repeat from.*

16th Row. Join on the 2nd shade of Amber,* De on D, 3 chain, 7 long, the 1st into the 1st space between the long stitches, making 1 chain at top between each, 3 chain, repeat from.*

17th and 18th Rows the same as the last, using the shades of wool in gradation.

19th Row. Join on the Light Lemon color, and work a row the same as the last.

If the centre should be at all full, previous to commencing the Border, slightly damp and lay it between a cloth and let it remain an hour or two with a weight upon it; also, if the centre is found troublesome to work, it will look very well worked in six shades of Violet, working 2 rows of each shade, commencing with the darkest.

A BABY'S KNITTED HOOD.

Two Knitting Pins, No. 9; 4 ditto, No. 12. 2 oz. of 4-Thread White Berlin Wool, and 1 Skein of White Dacca Silk.

Cast on 104 stitches on No. 9 pins and knit a plain row.

1st Row. Knit 2,* knit 2 together, wool before, knit 1, wool before, knit 2 together, knit 1, repeat from.*

2nd Row.-Pearl knitting, every alternate row is pearl knitting.

3rd Row.-Knit two together, knit 1, wool before, knit 3, wool before, knit three together, repeat from,* end with knit 2. 5th Row.-Knit 2,* wool before, knit 2 together, knit 1, knit 2 together, wool before, knit 1, repeat from.*

7th Row.-*Knit 3, wool before, knit 3 together, wool before, repeat from,* end with wool before, knit 2.

8th Row.-Pearl knitting, repeat from 1st row 4 times more, which will make 40 rows.

41st Row.-* Knit 3, knit 2 together, repeat from.* There must not be more than 84 stitches on the pin when this row is finished.

42nd Row.-Plain knitting, taking two together twice at the beginning and end of the row.

43rd Row.-Plain knitting. These two rows divide the roll, from the head part.

44th Row.-Pearl knitting.

Then repeat from the 1st to the 8th row 3 times.

Cast 18 more stitches on the same pin, to form the piece for the back of the head.

Repeat from the 1st to the 8th row, and then from the 1st to the 4th row.

Knit 4 plain rows with No. 12 pins, and cast off very tightly. Join the piece for the back so as to form a round, and make the crown thus-No. 12 needles,-cast on 6 stitches, 2 on each of 3 needles, then with a 4th needle knit 2 plain rounds.

3rd Round.-Make 1, knit 1, repeat.

4th Round.-Plain knitting.

5th Round.-Wool before twice, knit 2 together, repeat.

6th Round. Knit 1,* pearl 1, knit 2, repeat from.*

7th Round.-Plain knitting.

8th Round.-Wool before twice, knit 2 together. 9th Round.-Knit 1, pearl 1, knit 2, repeat from."

10th Round.-Wool before, knit 3.

11th Round.-Plain knitting.

12th Round.-Wool before twice, knit 2 together. 13th Round. Knit 1, pearl 1, knit 2, repeat from. 14th Round.-Plain knitting.

15th Round. Wool before twice, knit 2 together.

16th Round.-Knit 1,* pearl 1, knit 2, repeat from.*

17th Round.-Plain knitting, cast off loosely and finish with the following edge, which must be sewed on neatly. Cast 6 stitches on one of the same pins.

1st Row.-Slip 1, wool before, knit 2 together, wool before twice, knit 2 together.

2nd Row.-Knit 2, pearl 1, knit 1, wool before, knit 2 together.

3rd Row.-Slip 1, wool before, knit 2 together, knit 3.

4th Row.-Cast off 1, knit 2, wool before, knit 2 together, commence again as at 1st row,

For the Curtain.

Cast 158 stitches on the No. 9 pins.

1st and 2nd Rows plain knitting.

3rd Row.-Wool before, knit 2 together.

4th and 5th Rows.-Plain knitting.

6th Row.-Pearl knitting.
