During the year 1909, 619 applicants were called by mail for competitive examination; 430, or 69% appeared; 402, or 93% of those who appeared, finished the examination; 267 passed the examination successfully, which is equal to 43% of those called, 62% of those who appeared, and 66% of those who finished the examination.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS FOR OFFICIAL POSITIONS.

Besides the general requirements of citizenship, age and residence in the City of Milwaukee, mentioned in the rules, the following are some of the special requirements demanded during the past years for the various positions, which requirements are subject to change.

Bacteriologist.-Applicants must be graduates from a recognized medical college and possess a license for the State of Wisconsin; they must have had experience in bacteriological work at least one year, must be able to make all bacteriological examinations of milk, water, food-stuffs, etc., and must be able to conduct inoculation experiments and be fully conversant with all methods used in bacteriological work.

Brick and Pipe Sewer Inspector.-Practical and theoretical knowledge of brick and pipe sewer work, experience and sufficient general education and intelligence.

Bridge Superintendent.-Applicants should be mechanics well acquainted with the construction and repairing of bridges, and have the intelligence and executive ability to control all bridge tenders, carpenters and other workmen. Experience in matters of navigation desired.

Bridge Tender.-Age from 30 to 55 years; common school education; experience in similar work; ability to manage such electric motors as are used for bridges.

Chainman. Knowledge of the elements or geometry and mensuration; good education.

Chemist.-Applicants must be graduates of a regularly incorporated scientific college of good standing, must have done major work in the subject of chemistry, must have full knowledge of analytical methods, quantitative and qualitative, in organic and inorganic chemistry, and must have special knowledge in methods of food analysis, particularly of milk and water.

Chief and Assistant Chief Meat Inspector (veterinaries).-Graduation from a regularly incorporated college of veterinary surgery, and experience in judging and examining live stock.

Clerk-Stenographer-Typerwriter.-Proficiency in stenography; commercial arithmetic; good English.

Clerk-First Grade, Second Grade and High Grade.-Good handwriting; reliability in arithmetic; correct English and general intelligence in proportion to the grade of clerkship.

Dock Inspector.-Knowledge to be able to judge timber and pile driving, and manner of repairing docks.

Draughtsman and Assistant Draughtsman.-Elements of geometry and mensuration, and accuracy in platting according to surveyor's notes.

Elevator Inspector.-Applicants must possess expert knowledge of buildings, plans and specifications, electricity and machinery and its appliances, especially as appertains to elevators; they must also be competent mathematicians and have practical knowledge of everything in connection with the erection and construction of elevators, hoists, lifts, cranes and lifting devices of every nature and description.

Elevator Operator.-Sufficient school education and some familiarity with similiar work.

Engineer of Steam Road Roller.-Applicants must be practical machinists and steam engineers.

Field Inspector (Bridge Construction).-Ability to superintend the erection of bridges and viaducts, and knowledge of shop work.

Fireman of Stationary Boilers.-Familiarity with machinery and machinist's work, experience as a fireman and ability to do hard work.

Food Analyst.-Thorough knowledge of bacteriology and chemistry, and a medical diploma issued by a recognized college.

Gardener.-Common school education and experience in treating plants grown in the city parks and their greenhouses.

House Drain Inspector.-Practical knowledge of drains and sewers; common school education.

Inspector and Assistant Inspector of Buildings.-Applicants must be familiar with the building laws and be competent builders and architects.

Inspector of Bridge Construction.-Familiarity with structural iron

and steel work.

Inspector of Pipe Sewers.-See Brick and Pipe Sewer Inspector. Janitor.-Experience in attending to the proper cleaning of school rooms, in attending to boilers and other heating apparatus and gas engines; common school education.

Laboratory Assistant (Health Dept.).-Common school education; rudimentary knowledge of bacteriology.

Library Assistant.-Education equivalent to a four years' course in the city high schools; good knowledge in literature. Some of the subjects have been: Algebra, geometry, history (ancient and modern), physiology, physics, physical geography, and literature.

Library Page.-Education equal to that of a graduate of the eighth grade of the city schools.

Matron City Hospitals.-Candidates must have the requisite training and experience in the profession of nursing the sick and be able to take charge of a hospital and its subordinate employes.

Meat Inspector.-Age from 21 to 50 years; knowledge and practice in the slaughtering of animals; experience in treating meat and meat products; a thorough acquaintance with the best methods of detecting diseased and tainted meat in bulk or chopped and mixed; knowledge and experience in packing and preserving meats, and in the best methods of investigating the same.

Mechanical Engineer and Assistant Mechanical Engineer.-Sufficient experience as practical machinists, and technical knowledge.

Messenger.-Applicants must have a good common school education and know the localities of prominent buildings and streets.

Meter Reader-Clear, legible handwriting, good eyesight, and a good general education.

Milk Inspector.-Age not less than 21 nor more than 40 years; height not less than five feet six inches; weight not less than 145 pounds;
