PREFACE.

The following collection of Tales was commenced some time since, for the amusement of a particularly interesting little girl, whose education the Authoress then directed, but whose eye they have, however, never yet reached. Their oral communication has, since that period, often afforded delight to a group of little listeners; and induces the Authoress to hope they might produce the same effect in a more extended circle.

If but one young reader is led, by their perusal, to reflect (for reflection is the parent of conviction, and conviction must precede reformation ;) on the evil effects of procrastination, the advantages arising. from habits of order and neatness, and the silent and sure, though perhaps, slow influence of Individual Example, she will feel she has not written in vain.

Southgate,

February 1839.
