CLAUSES of an Act vicefimo fecundo Georgii II. Regis, intituled,

An ACT for the more effectual preventing of FRAUDS and ABUSES committed by Perfons employed in the MANUFACTURE of Hats, and in the Woolen, LINEN, Fuftian, Cotton, Iron, Leather, Furr, HEMP, FLAX, Mohair, and Silk Manufactures, and for preventing unlawful COMBINATIONS of Journeymen Dyers, and Journeymen Hot Preffers, and of all Perfons employed in the faid feveral Manufactures; and for the better Payment of their Wages.

And whereas the Penalties and Forfeitures to which Offenders against the faid Acts are fubjected, have not been fufficient to deter Perfons from committing the Offences thereby intended to be prevented: And whereas many Perfons employed in the making of Felts or Hats, and in preparing or working up the Manufactures of Furr, Hemp, Flax, Mohair, and Silk, and alfo the Manufactures made up of Wool, Furr, Hemp, Flax, Mohair, Cotton, or Silk, or fome of them mixed one with another, have of late been guilty of divers Frauds and Abuses, by purloining, embezzelling, fecreting, felling, pawning, exchanging, or otherwife unlawfully dif-. pofing of the Materials with which they have been entrusted; and it is therefore become neceffary to make Provifion for preventing fuch Offences for the future: Therefore, for amending and rendering more effectual the faid Act made in the 13th Year of his present Majesty's Reign, and for extending the Provifions and Regulations therein and herein made, to the feveral Manufactures herein before mentioned, be it enacted by the King's most Excellent Majefty, by and with the Advice and Confent of the Lords Spiritual and Temporal, and Commons, in this préfent Parliament affembled, and by the Authority

Perfons em- Authority of the fame, That if any PerManufactures fon or Perfons whatfoever, who fhall be herein defcri- hired or employed to make any Felt or convicted of Hat, or to prepare or work up any Woolembezzling &c. any of en, Linen, Fuftian, Cotton, Iron, Leathe Materials, ther, Furr, Hemp, Flax, Mohair, or Silk Manufactures, or any Manufactures made up of Wool, Furr, Hemp, Flax, Cotton, Mohair, or Silk, or of any of the faid Materials mixed one with another, fhall, from and after the Twenty-fourth Day of June, One thousand seven hundred and fortynine, purloin, embezzle, fecrete, fell, pawn, exchange, or otherwife unlawfully difpofe of any of the Materials, with which he, fhe, or they fhall be refpectively entrusted, whether the fame, or any Part thereof, be or be not first wrought, made up, manufactured, or converted inor of reeling to merchantable Wares, or fhall reel false falfe or short Yarn, or fhort Yarn, and fhall be thereof lawfully convicted, by the Oath, or (if the Owner thereof be of the People called Quakers) folemn Affirmation of the Owner of fuch Goods or Materials, or by the Oath or Affirmation of any other credible Witness or Witneffes, or by the Confeffion of the Perfon or Perfons charged with fuch Offence, before any one or more Juftice or Juftices of the Peace of the County, Riding, Divifion, City, Liberty, Town, or Place, where fuch Offence fhall be commit

ted, or where the Perfon or Perfons fo charged shall refide or inhabit, (which Oath or Affirmation the faid Juftice or Justices is and are hereby impowered and required to administer), it fhall and may be lawful to and for the faid Juftice or Justices, by Warrant under his or their Hand and Seal, or Hands and Seals, to commit the to be commitPerfon or Perfons fo convicted to the House of Correction, or other publick Prison of fuch County, Riding, Divifion, City, Liberty, Town, or Place, there to be kept to hard Labour for the Space of Fourteen Days, and alfo to order the Perfon or Perfons fo convicted, to be once publickly whipped at the Market Place, and be pu blickly whip or fome other publick Place of the City, ped. Town, or Place, where fuch Offender or Offenders shall be refpectively committed; and in cafe of a further Conviction, in Penalty of a Manner before prescribed by this Act, for viction, or or upon a fecond or other fubfequent Of- fubfequent fence of the fame Kind, it fhall and may be lawful to and for the Juftice or Juftices before whom fuch Conviction thall be had, to commit the Perfon or Persons fo again offending to the House of Correction, or other publick Prifon as aforefaid, there to be kept to hard Labour for any Time not exceeding three Months, nor less than one Month, and also to order the Perfon or Perfons fo again offending, N 2

$2. AND be it further enacted by the Authority aforefaid, That if any Person or Perfons fhall buy, receive, accept, or take, by way of Gift, Pawn, Pledge, Sale, or Workmen, Exchange, or in any other Manner whatfent of their foever, of or from any Perfon or Perfons, Employers, hired or employed to make any Felt or Hat, or to prepare or work up the Woolen, Linen, Fuftian, Cotton, Iron, Leather, Furr, Hemp, Flax, Mohair, or Silk Manufactures, or any Manufactures made up of Wool, Furr, Hemp, Flax, Cotton, Mohair, or Silk, or of any of the faid Materials mixed one with another, any Thrums or Ends of Yarn, or any other Materials of Wool, Furr, Hemp, Flax, Cotton, or Iron, or any Leather, Mohair, or Silk, whether the fame, or any Part thereof, be or be not first wrought, made up, or manufactured, knowing the Per
