literature, and which forms the leading characteristic of its present age, as the former of its past, is the DRAMA. The works of Schiller, Goethe, Lessing, and others, in this department, have become almost familiar to English readers from the eloquent work of Madame de Stael, and the writings of many modern critics. We had rather direct their attention to the German drama of the present day, and especially to the most distinguished of its authors at present in his own country, though only beginning to be known in others,-we mean Raupach.

Several years ago, an English critic, in speaking of the theatres in the south of Germany, observed, "Grillparzer himself, the tragic poet, the idol of the people, has ceased to write, and the stage has become the undisputed patrimony of Raupach of Berlin, until the moment of a new restoration, which is not far distant, shall arise."'*

so extraordinary and unprecedented an union of lateness in beginning, and miraculous fertility of production after it had commenced. Of this period he has given a very interesting account in the preface to his Cycle of national tragedies, entitled "The Hohenstauffen," the latest and most ambitious, though by no means the best of his attempts, and of which the preface is perhaps the most valuable part. The first signal proof that he gave of his dramatic, as well as poetic power, was in his exquisite tragedy of The Serfs, or Isidor and Olga," which was, and is, an amazing favourite every where on the German stage. It was also attempted on the English stage, but without success, partly from the intensity of the tragic gloom that pervades it, but more from the much altered garb in which it appeared in the English language, being so garbled by the translator, Mr. R. Talbot (whether from imagined necessity or The present time, therefore, before the birth of want of taste), as to be hardly recognisable in its this new dramatic generation, and while Raupach poetic character. The first, entitled "Timoleon," is nothing effect-would fill a much larger volume than the else than a political dialogue put into a dramatic work itself. It is, perhaps, on the whole, the most form, and styled "a monument of the liberation-wonderful production that has ever yet appeared in war of 1814:" but the principles it maintains are the annals of dramatic literature, almost of poetry quite the reverse of those which that war was waged itself, from the time of Homer down to the present to uphold. The other two are works of considerable day. The author has exhibited to the world, in one power, though in very different ways. The former, splendid peristrephic panorama, the whole life of "Lorenzo and Cecilia," is one of the most original, Semiramis, comprising in one play what Calderon extraordinary, and overwhelmingly affecting produc- has spread over two, and what an ordinary poet of tions that ever appeared. pach's plays, with the exception of "The Serf," which has been translated, as it is incomparably the one most deserving of it, not only from its superior beauty, but because it is the one whose beauties can be best preserved in a translation. Hence, while the attempt to produce "The Serf" in an English dress has failed both on the stage and in print, the Daughter of the Air can be read throughout with interest and delight; a difference certainly not owing to the translators, but solely to the different poetical character of the original. Its superiority in this respect would be still more striking in stage representation: that it has never been produced, may be matter of astonishment even under the present system of degradation and quackery to which the English drama has been suffered to sink.

There is one more work of this author's which is entitled to a particular notice, both as being the only one that possesses something of the peculiar character and charm of the last-mentioned produc tion (though in a comparatively feeble degree), and as being connected with the celebrated Epic poem above mentioned, from which it takes both its title and subject-" Der Nibelungen Hort." This is a still greater favourite on the German stage than the preceding, and perhaps with reason as far as theatrical effect is concerned; but for that very cause it is inferior as a poem, having the common fault of all Raupach's later productions, of sacrificing the intrinsic and permanent beauties of poetry to the external and temporary effect of acting. It is, however, very interesting and beautiful even to read, especially to those who are familiar with the great national legend which it celebrates; and it would preserve these qualities better in a translation than perhaps any other of his works. The rest are, perhaps, more calculated to fertilize the minds of other poets, and to be reproduced in imitations or original compositions, than to be exhibited in translations, especially "The Serf," which, in the hands of a poet of original genius, might be modelled into a drama of extraordinary beauty.

We pass over the varied riches of German literature in other departments, such as criticism, classical and national learning, philosophy, &c., as those subjects are less interesting though not less valuable; and to be treated of at all, they would require rather a volume than a notice. Their superiority to every other nation in classical learning is universally acknowledged.

One signal proof of the extensive spread of German literature, of late years, in this country, is to be found in the number of translations of works from that language, some of them of great merit.
