PUBLICATIONS OF THE CAMDEN SOCIETY. THE Camden Society was established in the early part of the year 1837; its object, to use the words of the prospectus, being "to perpetuate and render accessible whatever is valuable, but at present little known, amongst the materials for the civil, ecclesiastical, and literary history of the United Kingdom; " and it was proposed" to accomplish that object by the publication of historical documents, letters, ancient poems, and whatever lies within the compass of the objects of the society, in the most convenient form, and at the least possible expense consistent with the production of useful volumes." The society was not started in opposition to any in existence, but rather for the purpose of working with those already established, as far as it was practicable. Yet it was based upon a principle which had never before been applied to publications of an antiquarian character; namely, not the production of a few books for a few members, in return for a large amount of individual subscription, but upon the prin. ciple of multiplying the copies, extending to the utmost limits the numbers of the society, and producing as great a return, that is, as great a number of books as possible, for the comparatively trifling subscription of one sovereign annually. The success which attended the experiment far exceeded the expectations of the most sanguine of its projectors; and before the termination of the first year of its existence, the society had enrolled the extraordinary number of one thousand members, each of whom received in return for his subscription of one sovereign, five quarto volumes, handsomely done up (to use a technical phrase) in such a way as to render binding unnecessary, and containing about nine hundred pages of letter-press. But the progress of the society cannot be better described than by an extract from the report of the council to the last general meeting, when it was found necessary to extend the number of members from one thousand to twelve hundred. have been The Miracle Play of the Conversion of Sir Jonathas the Jewe by the blessed Sacrament, acted at. Edited by the Rev. Joseph Hunter, F.S.A. "Shortly after their appointment, the council were fortunate enough to obtain the zealous co-operation of the Rev. Dr. Bliss, registrar of the University of Oxford, and, at his suggestion, the number of the members was limited by the council to one thousand -a number which the most sanguine friends of the society did not, at that time, consider to be at all likely to be obtained. So little, indeed, did the council think that the proposed limit would be reached, that the first impression of the first and second books was restricted to 500 copies, instead of 1,000, the number which has since been adopted. "For another suggestion, that of the appointment of local secretaries, the council were indebted to W. B. D. D. Turnbull, Esq. of Edinburgh, secretary to the Abbotsford Club. The importance of this suggestion was duly appreciated, and it was, therefore, at once adopted and acted upon by the council. Dr. Bliss was kind enough to accept the office of local secretary for Oxford, Mr. Turnbull for Edinburgh, The Doctrines of the Lollards; a MS. attributed and the council have since appointed other gentle-to Wickliffe. Miracula Sancti Edmundi, scripta ab Hermanno archidiacono tempore Baldewini abbatis circa ann. Christi 1070. A Collection of Short English Sermons of the earlier part of the thirteenth century, from a MS. at Cambridge. Such is a brief sketch of what has already been accomplished by the Camden Society, and of what the council propose still to do. But it is obvious that the society is yet but in its infancy, and that what it has done, may, and, doubtless, will be, far exceeded in importance and value, by what it will do hereafter. In the first place, it is beginning to work a mine, doubtless exceedingly rich and curious, but which has yet been but little penetrated, and is not readily accessible to individuals-the private manuscript collections of the nobility. The noble example of the president of the society, Lord Francis Egerton, who, at the General Meeting in May last, communicated to the members that he had authorized Mr. Collier to select from amongst the MSS. in his possession, a volume of "Egerton Papers," has, it is seen, been followed by the Duke of Rutland, who has enabled the council to announce a volume of "RutA reprint of" Kemp's Nine Daies Wonder; per-land Papers," and by the Marquis of Salisbury, who formed in a Daunce from London to Norwich: Lon- most liberally, at the request of the council, placed don, 4to. 1600." In the next place, the stores of materials for illustrating English History and Literature, garnered in the libraries of the Continent, which were so properly made the subject of constant inquiry by Mr. Charles Purton Cooper, the indefatigable secretary of the late Record Commission, will, no doubt, be forthcoming for the use of the society; and it is to be hoped, that as that gentleman is one of the council of the Camden Society, he will continue to direct his attention to this important point.
