Syrup Albuminate of Iron.

MERRELL.

Colorless

Hydrastis

Compound.

Carbonol

Compound.

Green Root only is used. The menstruum is pure inodorous spirit, whereby the peculiar rich aroma and characteristic virtues of the fresh drug are extracted and retained unimpaired. It is a perfect representative of the drug, and to avoid the danger of overdoses in some cases, and the uncertainty of attending the use of inert and imperfect remedies in others, Tinct. Gelsemium-Merrell, only should be dispensed. It is an agent of wonderfully active therapeutic power, possessing a well defined and uniform standard of medicinal strength.

An organic compound of Iron, representing in a purified and soluble form the albuminate and salts (phosphates) present in the blood. It contains 0.7 per cent. metallic iron in a form that is readily absorbed and highly active.

This combination of Iron may be regarded as approximating the natural forms in which the metal is present in the animal system, and possesses a marked value in anæmia and chlorosis neurasthenia where prolonged administration of Iron is indicated It is not only free from any tendency to cause digestive disturbances but is of positive value in these conditions during convalescence, etc. One part of this syrup represents about fifteen parts fresh bullock's blood.

In this preparation the Chlorides of Aluminum, Calcium, Magnesium and Potassium are present with the white alkaloid of Hydrastis. This addition is favored by some physicians and the solution is somewhat more astringent than our regular Colorless Hydrastis.

Recommended for external use only in Gonorrhoea, Leucorrhoea, Nasal Catarrh, and all diseases of the Mucous Surfaces.

As an Injection or Wash.-Oné part to four or six of

water.

As a Spray.-One part to six or eight of water.
As an Eye Wash.--One part to twelve of water.
As a Cleansing Agent for the Ear.-One part to six of
water, to which has been added a few drops of creosote.

May be added to water or glycerine without precipitation.

This preparation consists of Carbonol, a perfectly pure and bland medicinal hydro-carbon product, in combination with Thymol, Eucalyptol, Menthol, Camphor and Oil Gaultheria.

A valuable, bland and soothing antiseptic and deodorant, exerting a decidedly beneficial influence on the mucous membranes. Successfully employed as an inhalant in the form of Spray in Catarrhal affections of the nose and throat.

PAS-CARNATA.

MERRELL.

This preparation contains all the active medicinal constituents of Passiflora Incarnata in concentrated form, and is the result of an extended investigation in our Laboratory. It is the most eligible form for exhibiting the valuable properties of the drug, since from it we have succeeded in eliminating the inert principles invariably present in ordinary preparations on the market.

Spasm in children.

TESTIMONIALS.

Nervousness and insomnia.

Dr. McAdow reports: "I have prescribed the Cordial Pas-carnata in several cases of threatened spasm in small children. In my hands it has proven a splendid remedy. A case of nervousness and insomnla in an old lady, a few doses acted like a charm."

In uræmic convulsions.

Dr. C. P. Hockett writes: "Cordial Pas-carnata proved a boon to me in a case of uræmic convulsions."

Insomnia from physical exhaustion.

Dr. Samuel C. Smith states: "Your advertisement in the Medical Mirror for November, page 26, and referring to Cordial Pas carnata excites in me wonder that a preparation of this wide spread usefulness has not been introduced to the medical profession before this. The therapeutic properties of the drug have been known to me for several years. It is first, a nerve sedative; second, a nerve tonic; a classincation which, though strange, is nevertheless true. It is undoubtedly a hypnotic and acts as such in insomnia arising from physical exhaustion."

Teething children.

Dr. G. Spiegel writes: "Your agent visited my office, and, among other preparations, recommended to me your Cordial Pas-carnata. A patient was announced. A baby was brought in crying from restlessness and from teething. Here, I thought to myself, was an opportunity to try the Cordial Pas-carnata. I asked your agent for a sample, administered it on the spot with almost immediate beneficial

results."

Sleeplessness of heart disease.

Dr. H. Neal writes: "A few days ago your agent kindly left me a sample of Cordial Pas-carnata. I have used this in a case of sleeplessness of heart disease in which other remedies produced no effect The Cordial Pas-carnata brought such happy results that I shall continue to use it wherever indicated." Insomnia of nervous temperaments.

The following personal letter, the original of which is on file in our office, is valuable testimony: "I am in receipt of your favor of the 6th, also the box of Cordial Pas carnata recently ordered, for the prompt shipment of which you will kindly accept my most sincere thanks. Your Cordial Pas-carnata has become a household necessity with both my wife and myself. We are both of a nervous tempera ment and troubled with insomnia, and up to date I have been unable to find anything that will equal the Cordial Pas-carnata in the treatment of the above trouble."

By all means—try it.

L. B. Downing, druggist, writes: "In June I ordered your Fluid Extract Passion Flower as an experiment, for a son of 12 years, who has made very rapid growth, and was at the time very nervous, and several physicians had tried in vain to help him, one an uncle, in whose family he staid a month. My wife happened to see your circular on Pas carnata, and on consulting the doctors who had treated him. they said, by all means try it.' The result was truly marvelous. There was a change for the better in four days. Facial and shoulder muscles were twitching when we commenced using it. In a few days they disappeared, and on 15-drop doses three times a day he keeps all right, apparently. I shall speak a good word for the medicine, as I have already done. Will you please send me some circulars to give to physicians."

Nervous irritation in women and children.

Dr. Jas R. Dickens writes: "Your agent left with me a sample of your Cordial Pas-carnata, a preparation entirely new to our physicians. Its use thus far has not been extended; but as a remedy for allaying nervous irritation, especially in women as well as for teething children, I find the Cordial meets a want in my practice which I have long desired to fill."

Anti-Diphtheritic Serum. Henry R. Slack, Ph.M., M.D., of La Grange, Ga., expresses (Atlanta Medical and Surgical Journal, Nov. 1897) a high opinion of Antitoxin as a preventive and curative agent in the treatment of diphtheria. His own experience in private practice bears out fully the favorable reports made to the American Pediatric Society by its special committee, and the clinical cases recited by him testify to the prompt and powerful action exerted by Antitoxin on both the local and constitutional symptoms of the disease. Dr. Slack concludes that the Anti-Diphtheritic Serum should be administered freely and promptly, as the loss of twentyfour hours may mean the sacrifice of a life. He recommends doses of from 1,000 to 2,000 units, according to the severity of the case, to be repeated in twenty-four hours if improvement is not manifest. A third dose may be given with perfect safety. Dr. Slack urges the use of the most concentrated strength of an absolutely reliable preparation. In his own cases he used Diphtheria Antitoxin of both foreign and domestic manufacture. He prefers that prepared by Parke, Davis & Co., for two reasons: 1, it is put up in hermetically sealed, large-necked glass bulbs; 2, it can be obtained fresher, thus increasing its reliability.

GEO. C. PITZER, M.D. 3955 West Belle Place, ST. LOUIS, MO.

Dr. Slack's article bears out the many tributes that have been paid to the Anti-Diphtheritic Serum of Parke, Davis & Co. on the score of its entire freedom from fatalities, casualties, or complications of any kind; its great concentration; and the promptness with which its curative powers are manifested.

An Efficient Treatment for Rheumatism and Allied Affections.— For the past seven years I have constantly prescribed Tongaline, and the longer I do so the more thoroughly I learn to rely upon its efficacy for the diseases for which it is indicated. I had always secured good results from its administrafion, but during the past year these have far surpassed all my expectations, especially in such serious and obstinate troubles as rheumatism, la grippe and sciatica. These really wonderful results I consider due to my methods of administering the preparation, and I believe it to be to the advantage of every physician to understand just what these methods are. For instance, when I have a very severe case of inflammatory rheumatism-a case where the swelling is great and the pain almost beyond endurance, together with a high temperature-I commence with a teaspoonful of Tongaline every hour, in a wineglassful of water just as hot as the patient can bear it. I follow the dose with as much hot water as the patient can take. In from four to eight
