RHINOLITH. In the New York Medical Journal, 9 July, 1898, Wm. H. Poole reports a case, with operation for removal. There was considerable hypertrophy of the turbinates of the left side, and the hypertrophied tissues were removed under cocaine anæsthesia. Afterward there were attacks of sick headache and secondary hæmorrhage, which were controlled by tamponing of the posterior nares with a sponge tent. Debility was marked, and not until three weeks afterward was the sponge removed. This was done in consecutive operations on successive days. until the anterior two-thirds was extracted. The remainder was dislodged under anæsthesia, the nasal cavity was cleansed with hydrozone, one part to twelve parts of lukewarm water, and immediate relief was obtained. The next day the nostril became suddenly obstructed, and the rhinolith was discovered. After its removal the treatment consisted of spraying the nasal cavity with hydrozone, followed by the use of glycozone, and the offensive discharge entirely disappeared. Microscopical examination of the calculus, which measured about two inches by one-half an inch. showed it to be composed of the phosphates of calcium and sodium, derived from the tears.

There was marked improvement in the young lady's condition after the removal of the rhinolith; overflowing of the tears in the left eye ceased, nasal respiration became perfect, her voice lost the nasal twang. and her general health improved rapidly, as indicated by the fact that she gained four pounds in weight after the operation.

DISEASES OF RHEUMATIC ORIGIN. Aside from its utility in the treatment of acute articular rheumatism, attention has been repeatedly called to the value of salophen in other affections in which a rheumatic element is established or suspected. Thus, for instance, it is a well-known fact that tonsilitis is particularly frequent in rheumatic subjects, and for this reason salophen has been employed quite considerably in this disease. and with excellent results. The remedy rapidly relieves the pain and swelling, and also reduces the temperature, while if employed early it tends to prevent suppuration. In like manner salophen has proved of decided value in the sore throat of scarlet fever and measles. Pleurisy occurring in those having a rheumatic tendency is greatly benefited by the administration of salophen, especially as regards the pain and fever. In cases of influenza attended with rheumatoid pains this remedy acts often with marvelous rapidity, allaying the distressing pains, reducing the temperature and promoting the comfort of the patient. Further, it seems to materially abridge the duration of the disease, and convalescence is prompter and more complete. While manifesting its efficiency in the diseases mentioned, salophen is devoid of any weakening effect upon the heart or disturbing influence upon the digestion, thus rendering it of two-fold value in cases attended with more or less exhaustion of the vital power.

IN LARYNGEAL OR WINTER COUGHS.- Dr. Walter M. Fleming (Journal of Nervous and Mental Disease) says that in acute attacks of laryngeal or winter cough, tickling and irritability of larynx, Antikamnia and Codeine Tablets are exceedingly trustworthy. If the irritation or spasm prevails at night the patient should take a five-grain tablet, containing 434 gr. Antikamnia and 4 gr. Sulphate Codeine, an hour before retiring, and repeat it hourly until the irritation is allayed. Allow the tablet to dissolve slowly in the mouth, swallowing the saliva. After taking the second or third tablet the cough is usually under control, at least for that paroxysm and for the night. Should the irritation prevail in the morning or at midday, the same course of administration should be observed until subdued. In neuralgia, in short, for the multitude of nervous ailments, he doubts if there is another remedial agent so reliable, serviceable and satisfactory, and this without establishing an exaction, requirement or habit in the system, as morphine does.
