Saturday, there was, in the m Morning, at Court, a great New Year's Appearance of the great Of-Day celebraficers of State, Foreign Minifters, Nobility, and Gentry, who went to pay their Complements and Refpects to the King, and the Prince and Princefs. of Wales. His Majesty and their RR.HH. went to the Royal Chappel, the Duke of Marlborough carrying the Sword of State; And after Divine Service, in which the Lord Bishop of Norwich, Clerk of the Clofet, A Vol. IX. Clofet, officiated, his Majefty went down to the Altar, and made the ufual Offering; In all Points conforming himself to the Rites, Ceremonies, and Ufages of the Church of England; as do alfo, their RR. HH. the Prince and Princess of Wales. Upon their Return from Chappel, his Majefty and their RR. HH. were pleafed to afflift at a Confort of Vocal and Inftrumental Mufick, in which was fung ant Ode compofed by Mr. Tate, Poet Laureat, and fet to Mufick by Mr. Eccles: In the Evening the Court was extream Nume in London, rous. The Earl of That Morning the Earl of Strafford arStrafford, and rived at his Houfe in Town; as did late Gen. Stau- the fame Evening General Stanhope, in hope arrive his Return from the Court of Vienna, having had a very quick Pallage from Holland; and not been above 24 Hours be tween the Hague and London. The next * Jan. 2d. * Morning, Mr. Stanhope, waited on his Mr.Stanhope Majefty, who made him a moft gracious very graciously Reception; and after he had been near receiv'd. an Hour in his Majesty's Closet, he waited on the Prince of Wales, who likewife received him very graciously. After the King, and the Prince and Princefs of Wales were return'd from Chappel, General Stanhope went to pay his Duty to her Royal Highnefs, and having kiss'd her Hand, had the Honour to entertain her for above a Quarter of an Hour, about his Journey, and the Court of Vienna: In which Converfation the whole Court admired her Royal Highnefs's Polite, Ealie Wit, Affability, and Graci oufnefs. |
