Now, Brucehaven, Limekilns, and Charleston, are interesting enough to look at, nestling under the green ridge of their limestone cliffs, beautifully defined by the verdant foliage, as if it were a veritable piece of the Emerald Isle that had been bodily transferred to the spot with the environs of Broomhall, the seat of the Earl of Elgin and Kincardine, presiding over a scene, of which the noble proprietor has done so much to evoke the energies. By a rather primitive looking railway, access is afforded to Dunfermline, about three miles distant from Charleston. The arrangement and regularity of this village itself is not a little remarkable; the cottages being ranged in rows, considerably apart, and each provided with a tolerable sized garden; whilst a large formidable looking establishment, which crowns the height, turns out to be the general baking house of the district. Every thing indicates a carefully organized system of society, which might form the model of other mining districts, with every probability of advantage to health and cleanliness.
