On motion of Mr. McMahon, it was

Resolved, That the rules of the last House of Representatives be and the same are hereby adopted as the rules of this House, until otherwise ordered.

On motion of Mr. McMahon,

Resolved, That the Clerk of the House be and he is hereby instructed to furnish to each member of the House a copy of the manual of the last House.

On motion of Mr. McMahon,

The House proceeded to the election of a Speaker, with the following result:

HOUSE JOURNAL.

Lansing, Wednesday, January 5, 1859.

Pursuant to the requirements of the Constitution, the members elect to the House of Representatives, for the Legislature of 1859, assembled at the Hall of the House, at-ten o'clock, A. M., and were called to order by the Clerk of the last House.

Upon examining the credentials, it was ascertained that every county was fully represented except Chippewa, Marquette, St. Clair and Van Buren.

On motion of Mr. Mussey, of Macomb,

Hon. CHARLES DICKEY, was chosen temporary Speaker.

On motion of Mr. McMahon, it was

Resolved, That a committee of three be appointed to wait upon the Lieutenant Governor, and request him to administer the oath of office to the members elect of the House.

The Speaker, pro tem, appointed Messrs. McMahon, Mussey, and E. H. Thompson said committee.

On motion of Mr. Robison,

The Speaker pro tem, appointed Charles Larzalere, Sergeant-atArms pro tem.

The committee appointed to wait upon the Lieutenant Governor, reported that they had discharged the duty assigned them, and that the Lieutenant Governor was in attendance to administer the oath of office to the members.

The roll of members was then called by counties and districts, and the following members answered to their names, and having subscribed and taken the oath of office, were admitted to seats.
