"The Sixth Class consisting of 30 boys, whose ages vary from six to 12 years, was examined by A. W. Russell, Esq.; the following are his remarks :

"The Class generally read well, and in their explanation evidently showed they quite comprehended the meaning of the text, excepting an occasional word of more rare occurrence than usual, which not being familiar to them, they, for the most part, showed difficulty in interpreting.

"Mr. Russell, late Secretary to the School, now Magistrate of Rungpore, who was at this station, on Mr. A. W. leave, during the months of March and April, and whose zeal in the cause of education is ever conspicuous, greatly assisted in the examinations. The Committee have reason to believe, that great efforts are made by the Head Master to advance Suggestions. his collective pupils in their knowledge of the English language.

"His duties, however, are at present so onerous, as to prevent him from supervising the proceedings of the lower masters, as carefully as is requisite, and he can never be certain that they carry out his instructions and intentions, in that department, as fully as he could wish.

"The Committee therefore beg to suggest, that two additional masters be appointed to the Bancoorah School (payable out of the surplus funds,) whose assistance will enable the Head Master to secure better instruction to all the students in English, at the same time that he superinduces greater solidity of acquirement, in every other department of study. "Mr. P. Taylor, Judge of this district, has very kindly appointed Sitanath Chatterjea, one of the junior scholars of last year, Second Writer in his office, on a salary of Rs. 50 per mensem. This measure, which is the third instance of provision for young men brought up in the Bancoorah School, afforded by that officer, has been a great encouragement to the cause of education in the district.

"The number of pupils borne on the rolls of the School on the 1st of April 1854, was 113, Number of Pupils, whilst that on the 31st of September 1852 was 80. The number has thus increased by onethird, and would have been greater if admissions had not been stopped by the Committee in accordance with the Circular Order of the Council of Education on the subject.

"The daily average attendance during 1853 was 68, and that during the first three months of 1854 Attendance. was 96; the number of absentees in each case having been nearly one among six boys; but that in the two preceding sessions was one among four and-a-quarter. It appears from this statement, that the practice of imposing fines for absence when not satisfactorily accounted for, and the resolution of the Committee to award prizes for regularity of attendance have been attended with success.
